When a hydroelectric dam is built a reservoir is formed behind it. This can be used to make renewable hydroelectric power. The reservoir can be used for water supply and recreation e.g. sailing and fishing. Water is stored in the reservoir and eventually passes through the dam downstream to the sea as part of the water cycle.
