1 Chapter 1 Data Analysis Ch.1 Introduction
Statistics: the Science and art of Data

2 Data Analysis IDENTIFY the individuals and variables in a set of data.
CLASSIFY variables as categorical or quantitative.

3 Organizing Data Statistics is the science and art of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.

4 Organizing Data Statistics is the science and art of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. An individual is an object described in a set of data. Individuals can be people, animals, or things.

6 Organizing Data Statistics is the science and art of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. An individual is an object described in a set of data. Individuals can be people, animals, or things. Variable - an attribute that can take different values for different individuals Categorical Variable assigns labels that place each individual into a particular group, called a category. Quantitative Variable takes number values that are quantities—counts or measurements.

7 Analyzing Data A variable generally takes values that vary. We are interested in the pattern of that variation.

8 Analyzing Data A variable generally takes values that vary. We are interested in the pattern of that variation. Distribution tells us what values a variable takes and how often it takes those values.

9 Analyzing Data

14 How to Analyze Data Examine each variable by itself.
Then study relationships among the variables.

24 In Class Activity Page 7 Read and discuss the narrative about pilots.

25 Assignment Page 7-8 #2-10 even (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) If you are stuck on any of these, look at the odd before or after and the answer in the back of your book. If you are still not sure text a friend or me for help (before 8pm). Read 1.1 page 9-24 Tomorrow we will check homework and discuss section 1.1.
