Procedure to Measure and Control Blood Oxygen Saturation Levels in Premature Infant

2. Project Goal
To design a device that can help monitor the blood oxygen levels and regulate oxygen delivery in premature babies.

3. What is retinopathy?
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an abnormality of the retina. Premature infants are born without fully developed blood vessels in their retina. Infants with ROP experience abnormal vessel growth in the retina. These vessels are fragile and often hemorrhage into the eye.
Severe Retinopathy can lead to blindness. Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in infants.

4. Current Standard of Care
Currently, blood oxygen levels of the neonates are controlled by nurses. The changes they make cause fluctuations in the saturated blood oxygen levels.
The fluctuation of blood oxygen levels in the neonates leads to abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina.

We are studying the pulse oximeter and its functions
Meeting with Dr. Graham, the neonatologist
Developing an interface with the pulse oximeter and the pc, using a serial cable

6. Future Work
Develop a program to read information from the Respiratory Gas Monitor (RGM).
Gather the vital statistics from Dr. Graham.
Create a program using established boundaries to regulate the flow of oxygen.
Develop a method that allows the pc to adjust the flow of oxygen into the incubator.
