1 Convection, Pressure Systems
What causes wind?

2 Hadley Cells Sun warmed air at the equator rises because it’s less dense. Air rises and moves towards the poles where it cools. The dense cool air sinks and moves toward the equator.

3

4 Convection Cells Rotation and friction break up the movement into smaller “cells.” These cells contain rising and sinking air, and cause the wind belts.

5 Pressure Systems Air moves from high pressure to areas of low pressure. Wind direction changes as the pressure systems move across the surface.

6 Jet Stream High speed winds at the top of the troposphere that steer Low pressure systems.

7 The coriolis effect bends the winds.
Objects on the equator are moving faster than those on the poles. When they move to different latitudes, they are deflected left or right.
