2 What Makes Our Nation Great?
Melting Pot of People Unique combination of cultures-races, religions, customs. Natural Resources-productive lands, mountains, coal, natural gas, freshwater lakes and rivers. Oceans-insulation that has kept 2 world wars off our soil. Free Public Education-freedoms to Choose.

3 What is the Supreme Law of our Country?
US Constitution

4 What is the “Bill of Rights?”
The popular name given to the first 10 amendments. Freedom of religion, speech, assembly Right to keep and bear arms. No soldier can go into any house without the consent of the owner. Be secure, no unreasonable searches and seizures, probably cause. Right to Jury, double-jeopardy, testify against themselves, right to life, liberty and property.

5 10 Amendments Cont. 6. Right to a speedy and public trial. Right to counsel and a defense. 7. Right to trial by jury. 8. Excessive bail, cruel and unusual punishment. 9. The enumeration of the Constitution should not be construed. 10. The powers not delegated to the US by the constitution are reserved to the states or to the people.

6 What does “Checks and Balances” Mean?
Specific authority given to each of the three basic branches of government. Not any one group has complete power.

Legislative Executive Judicial

This is CONGRESS Senate – 2 members from each state regardless of size. House of Representatives - # depends of population.

The PRESIDENT Vice-President

Supreme Court

11 In what way can the amendments be misinterpreted?
Vague Terms “speedy” “excessive” “cruel” “unusual”
