3 NCBO Definition Create non-traditional courses that are non-semester length. These courses are created to increase student success rates while decreasing time spent in developmental sequences. An opportunity to complete the developmental sequence in an accelerated pace utilizing just-in-time teaching, different learning styles, and rewards for previously mastered concepts.

4 Setting Up the Courses Met with Registrar, Budget, Deans, Financial Aid, and Counselors. Learned to have smaller meetings Some offices did not need to know everything. 5 Setting up the Classrooms/Lab
Needed computer lab space Work with what you have – borrow, beg and steal. Look in warehouse for furniture and computers. Use existing software/texts Stick with what you know and are comfortable using already

6 Setting up the Faculty/Staff
Faculty and Staffing Selection is crucial to success. BUY-IN Have to believe it will work. Want to make a difference and see need for change. FLEXIBILITY We are constantly changing and adapting to students individuality. HUMILITY Cannot have those that offend easily when students go to other instructor/tutor for assistance.

7 NCBO Courses We Offer Co-Requisite Model
DSMA 0393 (Intermediate Algebra) paired with MATH 1414 (College Algebra) Students meet for 1 hr 20 min Mon-Thurs. in the classroom. They are required to complete 2 hours in a computer lab each week. Same grade awarded for each course. Exams are cumulative and contain both course content questions.

8 NCBO Courses We Offer DSMA 0399 – NCBO Mathematics
Gives the student the opportunity to complete all three levels of developmental mathematics in one term. (Pre-, Beginning, and Intermediate Algebra) Course is “self-paced” Course progression is dependent on the student’s dedication to complete the mastery quizzes.

Proof It Works Data for DSMA 0399 for one CY (Spring/Summer/Fall) Course Level Completed Pre-Algebra 33 Beginning Algebra 89 Intermediate Algebra 21 Withdraw / Drop 7 Total 150 * 6 students took the course in two consecutive semesters, highest completed developmental course recorded above. ** 13 students from the above table took the course again this Spring 2014 term.
