Daily Objectives: List the problems of farmers during the second half of the 19th century Analyze the ways in which farmers responded to their problems and the solutions they proposed.

5 The Grange -began as social group that evolved into a political group
-called for regulation of railroads -“Granger Laws Granger laws ruled unconstitutional in Wabash v. Illinois, 1887 -ICC- Interstate Commerce Commission- federal gov. agency that regulates interstate commerce

6 The Farmers Alliances Begun in the late 1880s
More political and less social than the Grange. Ran candidates for office. Success: Controlled 8 state legislatures & had 47 representatives in Congress during the 1890s.

7 United We Stand, Divided We Fall
In 1889 both the Northern and Southern Alliances merged into one—the Farmers’ Alliance.

9 Free Silver Crusade -Panic of 1893: nation enters a recession -many people promote idea of silver and gold standard for currency -would create larger money supply -Gold standard only would limit money supply as gold reserves were limited

14 Why Did Bryan Loose? His focus on silver did not appeal to urban voters He did not form alliances with other groups. McKinley’s campaign was well- organized and highly funded.

1900  Gold Standard Act confirmed the nation’s commitment to the gold standard.

16 Why Did Populism Decline?
The recession improved. The era of small farmers was fading away. Race divided the Populist Party, especially in the South. The Populists were not able to break existing party loyalties. Most of their agenda absorbed by the Democratic Party.

17 End of the Populists Legacy of Populism: Downtrodden and Poor people can Politically Organize and have a voice in national politics Their Platform/Agenda had many REFORMS that would be enacted in the 20th century
