8 The Alliance System (Cause #1)
Alliance played an extremely important role in the lead up to WWI There were two major alliances The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance

9 The Triple Entente Great Britain France Russia

10 The Triple Alliance Germany Austro-Hungary Italy

11 We hate each other! We want to be the best!
*1. The Alliance System Triple Entente: Triple Alliance: Ughhh! We hate each other! We want to be the best! Austro-Hungary

12 The Major Players: 1914-17 Allied Powers: Central Powers:
Nicholas II [Rus] Wilhelm II [Ger] George V [Br] Enver Pasha [Turkey] Pres. Poincare [Fr] Franz Josef [A-H]

13 The Alliance System (Cause #1)
These countries had signed alliances years before World War I began The Triple Alliance was formed in 1882 The Triple Entente was formed in 1907

14 Growth of Militarism (Cause # 2)
Militarism is a military mindset as well as the quick and aggressive growth of the military, especially during times of peace Most Europeans nations strongly supported Militarism before World War I Especially those countries in The Triple Alliance and The Triple Entente

15 Growth of Militarism (Cause # 2)
By the beginning of the 1900’s the major countries in Europe had grown their armies to unprecedented sizes From 1890 to 1914 most Europeans armies doubled in size Tensions were already high in Europe and the continued expansion of armies did not help

16 Growth of Militarism (Causes # 2)
Total Defense Expenditures for the Great Powers [Ger., A-H, It., Fr., Br., Rus.] in millions of £s. 1870 1880 1890 1900 1910 1914 94 130 154 268 289 398 Increase in Defense Expenditures France 10% Britain 13% Russia 39% Germany 73%

17 Growth of Militarism (Causes # 2)
What problems could arise from this massive military build up? Do you think Nationalism had any part in the massive military build up which took place?

18 Economic and Imperial Rivalries (Cause # 3)

19 Economic and Imperial Rivalries (Cause # 3)
European countries wanted to be the MOST economically prosperous or claim the MOST overseas colonies This desire created rivalries and tensions throughout Europe The mass land grabs in Asia and Africa fueled these rivalries

20

21 Economic and Imperial Rivalries (Cause # 3)
People of European countries sense of pride in their country became directly tied to their country’s economic place in world as well as the number of colonies held There was a limited amount of land which could be colonized and the constant fight over this land helped to make Europe a ticking time bomb

22 Nationalism (Cause # 4) The last two causes are both directly related to nationalism Many citizens, political leaders, and military leaders felt their nation was better than the rest Many of these people longed for an opportunity to PROVE their superiority

23 Nationalism (Cause # 4) What better way to prove your country is better than your rivals than destroying them and their allies a war and taking all their colonies and land away right? This is how some people felt in Europe at the time You can think of Europe as a powder keg, waiting for something to spark it

24 Let’s Look At THE Event That Started WWI
The assassination of an Austro-Hungarian prince can be pointed to as THE even that started World War I This might seem a little crazy and you would be right to think that
