1 Types of Matter Warm – Up #1
1. Who came up with the idea of conservation of matter? Give an example of conservation of matter? 2. List parts of an atom. Include location and charge. 3. How many neutrons are in Boron? 4. How many electrons are in Lithium?

2 Types of Matter 4-2

3 Elements Elements – matter made up of only one type of atom
Example – gold or iron

4 Natural Elements 90 elements commonly found on Earth Nitrogen, Oxygen
Gold, Silver

5 Synthetic Elements Synthetic Elements – made in machines called particle accelerators Not commonly found on Earth

6

7 Periodic Table Based on the work of Dimitri Mendeleev
Periodic Table – chart that organizes elements by the number of protons in the nucleus

8

9 Periodic Table Provides atomic mass Pattern of electrons
Solid, liquid, or gas

10

11 Chemical Symbol 1, 2, or 3 letter abbreviation Hydrogen – H
Some come from Latin Words Iron – Fe ferrum

12 Ion Ion – atom that has lost or gained one or more electrons
Has a charge

13 Isotope Isotope – atoms of the same element
Different number of neutrons

14 Chemical Formulas Chemical Formulas – made up of symbols and numbers
Tell what elements and ratios in compound

15 Chemical Formulas H2O 2 Hydrogen; 1 Oxygen 2H2O 4 Hydrogen; 2 Oxygen

16 Mixture Mixture – 2 or more substances put together that don’t form a compound

17 Compounds Compound – substance made of 2 or more different elements
Chemically combine Example – Water or H2O Elements hydrogen (2 atoms) and oxygen (1 atom) combine to form water

18

19 Molecules Molecules – smallest unit of a substance that behaves like the substance More than one atom together Same or different atoms

20 Chemical Formula Chemical formula – shows how many atoms of each element are in a substance # in front of letter = # of molecules # in subscript = # of atoms 3C12H22O11 3 molecules of sugar Each molecule contains given # of atoms

21 Pure Substances Materials are made of a pure substance or a mixture of substances. Pure substance - matter that has a fixed composition and definite properties Elements or compounds

22 Mixtures Mixture – combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined Example - Pizza

23

24 Heterogeneous Mixture
Heterogeneous mixture – substances aren’t mixed uniformly and aren’t distributed evenly Flour mixed with water

25 Heterogeneous Mixtures

26 Homogeneous Mixtures Homogeneous mixture - contains two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances blended evenly throughout.
