1 Plan It Green Shaw STEM Lab

2 Objectives By the end of Plan It Green, you and your partner should be able to Describe the difference between Green Energy and Fossil Fuel Explain which is better; Fossil Fuels or Green Energies Formulate a city using Plan It Green

3 Green Energy vs. Fossil Fuel
Green Energy, often referred to as Renewable Energy, are resources that rely on fuel sources that restore themselves over a short period of time and do not diminish. Examples of Renewable Energy is the sun, wind, moving water, organic plant and waste material and the earth’s heat. Source: EPA.gov

4 Green Energy vs. Fossil Fuel
Fossil Fuel or Conventional Power is the combustion of materials. These materials can be coal, natural gas and oil. Another example of Conventional Power is the nuclear fission of uranium. Source: EPA.gov

5 Green Energy vs. Fossil Fuel
Both Green Energy and Fossil Fuels have their positives and negatives. Green Energy can have impacts on the environments they are installed or used. Example: large hydroelectric resources can have environmental trade-offs on such issues as fish hatcheries and land use. Fossil Fuel also has environmental costs. Like mining drilling, or extraction of green house gases and air pollution during combustion. Nuclear power generation emits no green house gases during production, it does require mining, excavation and long-term radioactive waste storage. Source: EPA.gov

6 Green Energy vs. Fossil Fuel
Check out this image from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It depicts how the EPA defines different types of energy resources based on their relative environmental benefits. Source: EPA.gov

7 Plan It Green Plan It Green is a web browser based program that allows you to create your own city. Using this program you’ll see the benefits of using Green Energy.

8 Getting Started Read all of the instructions on this slide first!
Click on the Plan It Green logo Once there, click Registration Create your Avatar and name your city For the birthday enter in the year 2000 For the , use your student ID number Example: Enter a password Write this and your address on your Word document so you don’t forget it!

9 Questions/Research Define Green Energy and cite at least two (2) examples Define Fossil Fuels and cite at least two (2) examples What type of energy was used in Plan It Green? Why do you think they used these? Describe, in at least five (5) sentence the most challenging part about making a city entirely green?
