What is Multimedia? „Talking about multimedia is a lot like talking about love. Everybody agrees that it´s a good thing, everybody wants it, wants to participate in it, but everybody has a different idea of what „it“ really is. Right now, the industry reminds me of a bunch of teenagers dabbling in something that instinctively feels right, all the while wondering how and when they´ll know for sure if they´re really in „it,“ and what to do about it if they are.“ (Vaughan) „Hovory o multimédiích se velmi podobají hovorům o lásce. What is Multimedia? The term „Multimedia“ was coined from two terms: multiple and media. Hence, Multimedia means the use of multiple medias to communicate In other words, multimedia is a combination of different media elements like text, audio, graphics, video and animations The combination of all these media elements makes communication more structured and understandable to the user. Now-a-days, Multimedia is used in every field - like education, theatre, advertising, fashion, or gaming, to name a few

What is Multimedia? When different people mention the term Multimedia, they often have quite different - or even opposing, viewpoints: A PC vendor: a PC that has sound capability, a DVD-ROM drive, and perhaps, the superiority of multimedia-enabled microprocessors that understand additional multimedia instructions A consumer entertainment vendor: An interactive cable TV with hundreds of digital channels available, or a cable TV-like service delivered over a high-speed Internet connection A Computer Science (CS) student: applications that use multiple modalities, including text, images, drawings (graphics), animations, video, sound - including speech, and interactivity Multimedia and Computer Science: Graphics, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), visualization, computer vision, data compression, graph theory, networking, database systems

What is Multimedia? Multimedia can have many definitions; these include: (From a computer system perspective) Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio, video, and animation in addition to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics/drawings, images).

General Definition A good general working definition for this module is: Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media, where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally Important thinks: INTERACTIVITY! A Multimedia Application is an application which uses a collection of multiple media sources, e.g. text, graphics, images, sound/audio, animation and/or video

What are HyperText and HyperMedia?
Hypertext is a text which contains links to other texts. The term was invented by Ted Nelson around 1965

HyperText Navigation Moving through hypertext pages is therefore, usually non-linear, (as indicated below) This has implications for the layout and organisation of materiál, and depends a lot on the relevant application

Hypermedia HyperMedia is not constrained to being text-based. It can include other media, e.g., graphics, images - and especially, continuous media – i.e. sound and video

Multimedia Systems A Multimedia System is a system capable of processing multimedia data and applications A Multimedia System is characterised by the processing, storage, generation, manipulation and rendition of multimedia information.

Multimedia System Characteristics
A Multimedia system has four basic characteristics: Multimedia systems must be computer controlled Multimedia systems are integrated The information they handle must be represented digitally The interface to the final presentation of media is usually interactive

Multimedia System Components
Now let us consider the components (i.e. Hardware and Software) required for a multimedia system: Capture devices — Video Camera, Video Recorder, Audio Microphone, Keyboards, mice, graphics tablets, 3D input devices, tactile sensors, VR (Virt. Reality) devices, Digitising Hardware Storage Devices — Hard disks, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM, flash disks, etc. Communication Networks — Local Networks, Intranets, the Internet, Multimedia or other special high-speed networks Computer Systems — Multimedia Desktop machines, Workstations, MPEG/VIDEO/DSP Hardware Display Devices — CD-quality speakers, HDTV, Hi-Res monitors, Colour printers etc.

Multimedia Computer (MPC)
The Multimedia PC (MPC) was the recommended configuration (by a consortium of companies including Microsoft, Creative Labs, Dell, Gateway, and Fujitsu) for a multi-media Personal Computer (PC) with a CD-ROM drive. The first MPC minimum standard - set in 1991, was: 16 MHz 386SX CPU 2 MB RAM 30 MB hard disk 256-color, 640×480 VGA video card 1× (single speed) CD-ROM drive, using no more than 40% of CPU capacity to read, with < 1 second seek time Sound card (Creative Sound Blaster was recommended at the time[1as the closest available to standard) output: 22 kHz, 8-bit sound; and input: 11 kHz, 8-bit sound Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions

Multimedia Computer (MPC)
In 1993, an MPC Level 2 minimum standard was announced: 25 MHz 486SX CPU 4 MB RAM 160 MB hard disk 16-bit color, 640×480 VGA video card 2× (double speed) CD-ROM drive, using no more than 40% of CPU capacity to read at 1x, with < 400 ms seek time Sound card output: 44 kHz, 16-bit CD quality sound Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions, or Windows 3.1

In 1996, MPC Level 3 was announced: 75 MHz Pentium CPU 8 MB RAM 540 MB hard disk Video system that can show 352×240 at 30 frames per second, 16-bit color MPEG-1 hardware or software video playback 4× CD-ROM drive using no more than 40% of CPU capacity to read, with < 250 ms seek time Sound card output: 44 kHz, 16-bit CD quality sound Windows 3.11 or Windows 95

Virtual Reality Virtual Reality or Virtual Realities (VR) - can be referred to as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, replicates an environment that simulates a physical presence in places in the real world or an imagined world, allowing the user to interact in that world. Virtual Realities artificially create sensory experiences - which can include sight, touch, hearing, and smell.
