3. A2 Health Studies
At A2 students will cover 2 units of work *Unit 9- Working in Health and Social Care (60%) *Unit 7- Provision of Health, Social Care and Children’s Services (40%) *Qualification graded from A*-U

4. Coursework Unit 9- Working in Health and Social Care
This A2 unit consists of coursework which will be internally assessed
The aim of this unit is to help you prepare for employment within Health and Social Care
You will select two contrasting job roles of your choice
You should be able to reflect on your suitability for employment in different job roles
You will build on your knowledge and understanding of caring skills covered in unit 1 last year

5. Unit 9- Working in Health and Social Care
The content of this unit includes:
9.1-The main employment sectors in health, social care and children’s services
9.2-Job roles of practitioners
9.3-The qualifications and skills needed by practitioners
9.4-Caring skills and techniques to meet the needs of individuals

6. 9.1- Employment sectors
You will need to have knowledge and understanding of the main employment sectors in health, social care and children’s settings:
Statutory, Independent and Voluntary sectors
Factors influencing the availability of jobs will also be considered, these include:
The Political and Economic Situation
New technological Developments
Demographic factors

7. 9.2- Job roles of practitioners
You will gain knowledge and understanding of the variety of jobs and specialist roles within health, social care and children’s services to include:
Main duties and responsibilities of the two practitioners you have selected
Conditions of employment
Job satisfaction
Working in multi-disciplinary teams

8. 9.3-The qualifications and skills needed by practitioners
You will learn about:
The main routes into employment in these sectors- academic, vocational and occupational
Entry requirements
Personal qualities needed
Skills needed

9. 9.4- Caring Skills/Techniques
You will revisit the 13 caring skills/techniques covered in AS unit in order to assess ways in which practitioners use these in their job roles

10. Unit 9- Coursework assessment
In order to complete this unit you will produce a report based on a study of two different job roles. The report will take the following structure:
Introduction and Aims: Aims, employment sectors, outline of jobs in sectors, selection and description of chosen job roles
Main body of report: Roles and functions of selected jobs, personal qualities/skills and training, national and local employment opportunities, collection and interpretation of feedback from practitioners
Evaluation: The success of the report in meeting set aims, the suitability of the procedures used for collecting data, comparison of the two job roles, self evaluation of suitability, suggestions for improvement

11. Unit 7- Provision of Health, Social Care and Children’s Services
This A2 unit consists of a piece of controlled assessment and will be externally assessed
In this unit you will study the main health, social care and children’s services to meet individual needs
The content of this unit includes:
Service provision in the local area
Meeting individual needs
Practitioner roles within multi-disciplinary teams
Quality assurance procedures
Effects of national policy and legislation on service provision

12. 7.1- Service Provision in the local area
You should be able to understand and apply your knowledge of:
Health Services
Social Care services
Services for children
Primary services
Secondary services
Tertiary services
Statutory/Private and Voluntary services

13. 7.2- Practitioner roles within multi-disciplinary teams
You need to understand the work carried out by formal care practitioners in health, social care and children’s services
You will learn about:
Roles and responsibilities of practitioners
How a multi-disciplinary can provide a ‘seamless’ service
Importance of early intervention and prevention

14. 7.3- Meeting Individual Needs
Students will have the opportunity to investigate how practitioners respond to the changing physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs of individuals
You will need to understand:
The purpose of individual care assessments
The main stages in the care planning cycle
Importance of an individual’s involvement in the care planning process
How service provision is tailored
How individuals might benefit from effective care planning
The contribution of informal carers in meeting the needs of individuals

15. 7.4- Quality Assurance Procedures
You will have the opportunity to investigate:
Quality assurance in care
How organisations implement quality assurance procedures
How organisations manage and monitor the quality and monitor the quality and effectiveness of the services they provide

16. 7.5- Effects of national policy and legislation on service provision
This topic looks at:
The possible effects of national policy and legislation on individuals
The effects of legislation on services and practitioners
The effects of legislation on care practices

17. Unit 7- Assessment This unit is externally assessed
You will be required to produce a report based on a coursework assignment, 10 hour duration, set and marked by WJEC
It is recommended that the work is limited to approximately 4000 words

19. A2 Health Studies *Homework/Background Reading ESSENTIAL !
Use a range of sources as suggested in class for coursework units
Ensure all coursework tasks are up to date
Identify spaces on timetable when you can do extra reading/coursework
5 hours work per subject as minimum

Coursework must be clearly labelled with name and headers and footers
Changes made since first submission must be clearly indicated on second submission (Unit 9 only)

21. A2 Health Studies Submission dates will be set throughout the year
However all portfolio work will be completed before the 1st May 2017
No work will be marked after this date as per WJEC guidelines
