3. The Fascists Join Teams

What does Europe do?
NOTHING!!!
FDR finally pushes UK and France to meet with Hitler!

5. Munich Conference Failure?
Hitler agrees to stop expanding if the rest of the Sudetenland is given to Germany
UK and France appease Germany.
Appeasement = give in to demands in order to keep larger conflict in future
But does it work???

6. Appeasement Fails Aug. 1939 Sept. 1939
Hitler prepares to expand, but understands he needs to keep USSR out of the way
Goes to Joseph Stalin
They agree not to attack each other.
Called the non-agression pact

Germany invades Poland

7. World War II Breaks Out Sept. 1939
UK and France join to make the Allied Powers
Allied Powers declare war on Germany for invading Poland
Axis Powers declare war on Allied Powers

8. What does the US do? 1939-1940 Nothing! Why? After election
It was an election year.
FDR needed to get reelected first so he promised to ‘keep us out of the war’
After election
FDR immediately tries to help the Allied Forces
But how?

After the appeasement fell apart, Neville Chamberlain loses his job as Prime Minister of England
Gets replaced by Winston Churchill
Tough Brit who loves to fight
Hates Hitler!
How does Hitler respond?

10. Hitler goes on the move
Wants to get to England before America decides to join….
Has to attack France first
May 1940
France falls to Germans
All that is left is England and USSR….

11. Hitler attacks England!
June 1940
German Air Force (Luftwaffe) attack England daily
Dropped 30,000 bombs a day
Americans still aren’t sure what to do.
Prime Minister Churchill begs America to act before there is nothing left…

12. Lend Lease Act/Cash –Carry Act
Gave $7 million dollars of:
Ships
Planes
Tanks
Weapons
All of it went only to Allied Forces countries
Cash-Carry ( 1941)
Gave away items to England
weapons

13. Even then, America didn’t want to Join
Congress has the right to declare war
FDR is begging to declare war on Germany but he can’t persuade Congress
Dec. 7, 1941
Out of nowhere, Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Destroys the U.S. Navy in Pacific Ocean
