Democratic-Republicans Thomas Jefferson: Powerful States Strict Construction of the Constitution: it should be ready very strictly. If it doesn’t Specifically say, You can’t do it. Federalists Alexander Hamilton: Powerful Federal Government Loose Construction of the Constitution: it can be ready loosely. Is it hinted at? Then you can do it.

5 Election of 1800 Jefferson & Burr tie for President!
Burr supposed to be VP, but won’t step aside Constitution says House of Reps decides ties in electoral college Alexander Hamilton (Federalist) backs Jefferson, so he wins

6 Burr challenges Hamilton to a duel and kills him.
Later, Burr is disgraced after he is charge with trying to overthrow Jefferson to become King USA

7 Marbury vs. Madison Judicial Review: Supreme Court claims right to declare laws unconstitutional. Adam’s appointed Marbury at the last minute to get back at Jefferson Think: Jefferson and D-R’s didn’t like the ruling, why?

8 Embargo Act Britain and French kept stealing U.S. ships, goods, and sailors. Jefferson declare an embargo on trade with all foreign nations. Meant to hurt Britain and France, but hurts USA more. Embargo: ban on trade

9 Louisiana Purchase Napoleon, Emperor of France offered to sell the Louisiana Territory to USA. Louisiana Territory: all lands drained by Mississippi River Think: Did Jefferson think he had the power to buy it? Why? Louis and Clark: explorers sent by Jefferson to map newly bought territory.
