1 Aim: To explore Modern support of the Ontological Argument
Aim: To explore Modern support of the Ontological Argument. To know the philosophical concept of possible worlds. To be able to explain Plantinga’s argument To develop a deeper understanding of Plantinga’s argument

2 Sliding Doors What is the philosophical concept of possible worlds?

3 Possible Worlds A possible world in which things are the way they could be. Possible worlds are infinite. The possibilities are endless.

4 Plantinga’s Ontological Argument
There is a possible world where there is a being which can exist in every possible world and therefore does. (maximal greatness). It is also possible that this being also has maximal excellence which must entail omnipotence, omniscience and moral perfection. If it has these qualities and maximal greatness, the being must exist in our world. Therefore, there is a God.

5 Plantinga’s Ontological Argument
Explain why Mr Whitlock can’t have maximal greatness. Give examples of possible worlds to illustrate your point. Explain what is meant by maximal excellence. Could a being who has only maximal excellence and not maximal greatness exist in all worlds? Explain you answer. Is it logical possible for a being who is maximally great and not maximally excellence to exist? Explain your point. What problem might this argument pose for religions such as Christianity and Islam? Hint: Historical figures.
