1 How do we measure wellbeing?
Learning intention: What indicators can we use to determine wellbeing and how does spatial variation (where we live) affect this.

2 Comparative Terms of Development
First World Second World Third World Developed North Undeveloped South Developed Underdeveloped Middle-Income Developing MEDC NIC EE LEDC

3 The Brandt Line

4 Cold War Terminology (and beyond)

5 Mapping developed or developing?
What is an issue with labelling each country in this manner? What does this map do differently and is it better or worse?

6 Development – what is it?
Countries can be described in terms of level of development in regards to economic, social, environmental, political, and technological spheres. Terms such as these are used to describe them: MEDC: more economically developed country NIC: newly industrialised country EE: emerging economies LEDC: less economically developed country What are all of these terms linked to? What are they not linked to?

7 MEDC and LEDC comparison
Indicator MEDC LEDC Birth rate Death rate Life expectancy Infant mortality rate Literacy rate Access to safe drinking water Access to electricity GDP per capita Create this table in your notes listing each of the indicators. For each the MEDC and LEDC columns state whether you think each would be high or low and a short statement explaining why you made that statement.

8 Poverty – what is it? The UN (United Nations) defines poverty as ‘a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity… It means not having enough to feed and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living… It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living in marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation.’ Why is it easy to measure poverty, development or wellbeing based solely off economic indicators (think back to how we measure indicators)? How do you think place (where we live) affects how impoverished, developed or well- off we are?

9 Prep Optional Prep: Look at the learning intentions of this PowerPoint, and use 7.2 in the text to summarize what you now know about learning intentions. Write down one question you have (and ask your teacher this question) in regards to the content addressed in the section.
