2 How did Jefferson avoid War with England?
Jefferson opposed war instead he used The Embargo Act of 1807, which halted all trade with Europe. Embargo is a government ban on trade with other countries. The Embargo ended up hurting American business more than England.

3 Who were the War Hawks? War Hawks
Congressmen who favored war with Britain. They wanted the British out of Canada to take over land. When Madison became President, they began to pressure him to declare war.

4 What were the 2 causes of the War of 1812 given by Madison?
1.British were supporting Tecumseh and the Native American resistance . This angered Americans.. 2. The main dispute was the impressment of American sailors . British Navy was kidnapping sailors and making them join the British Navy.

5 Declaration of War June of 1812 President Madison asked Congress for declaration of war. War started with the invasion of Canada. Oliver Hazzard Perry wins battles on Lake Erie.

7 The Roof is on Fire… In August 1814, British Forces Sailed into Chesapeake Bay and capture Washington D.C. They burned the White House and the U.S. Capitol Madison, his wife Dolly, and Congress barely escaped.

8 The Battle of Baltimore at Ft. Mc Henry
The British bombarded the fort with cannonballs fired from land and nearby ships. Francis Scott Key watched as the British guns pounded Ft. McHenry. Key wrote down his experience in a poem. It was later set to music and is now known as our “Star-Spangled Banner.”

11 Treaty of Ghent Treaty was Negotiated in Europe and was signed on Dec. 24, 1814 ending the war of 1812. Neither side gained or lost any territory, because there was no clear winner.

12 Battle of New Orleans Battle was unnecessary because the War was already over. Happened 2 weeks after the Treaty of Ghent. Made Andrew Jackson a national hero. 2,000 British killed only 71 Americans

13 Legacy of the War Americans were forced to make the goods themselves that they imported from Europe, which builds U.S. manufacturing. Native American threat less Tecumseh killed at Battle of Thames.. U.S. proves it can beat anyone (Boosts National Pride). Andrew Jackson becomes National hero.
