6. The Duke of Ed Award – Why Do It?
The Award is an endorsed program and Year 10, 11 and 12 students can count it towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
1 QCE point gained for attaining the Bronze Award.
Recognised by Colleges and Universities in selection processes
Gain employability skills highly sought after by employers

7. The Award – Why Do It?
The Award experience is different for everyone, however there are some things we can guarantee. You will:
be challenged
step outside your comfort zone
have adventures and learn about new passions
help others
build confidence, resilience, and employability skills
discover that you’re capable of things you didn’t dream were possible!

8. The Award – The Levels
Has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each progressively more challenging

10. The Bronze DofE Award - Requirements
SERVICE
To develop and encourage a sense of community spirit and responsibility to others
PHYSICAL RECREATION
To encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement in physical fitness and performance
SKILL
To encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills.
ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY
To encourage a spirit of adventure or discovery.
1 hour per week over 3 months
1 hour per week over 3 months
1 hour per week over 3 months
2 days + 1 night (plus a practice journey of the same length)
Averaging at least 1 hour per week, plus an additional 3 months for either service, physical recreation or skill.

This Section is all about getting out and going on an expedition or exploration in an unfamiliar and challenging environment, with a clear purpose.

16. COST In Queensland it costs $145 to register for the Bronze Award.
This fee also covers your insurance, record book, certificate and badge. .

17. What is the Bridge Award?
The Bridge Award is a positive youth development program that is both fun and challenging.
It is based on The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and offers young people the opportunity to gain new skills, improve their physical fitness, participate in community service and develop a spirit of adventure.

18. Who can do it?
The Bridge Award is available to young people aged 11 ½ to 25 years.
It builds confidence and resilience and is a great introduction for the many young people who progress on to the Bronze level of The Duke of Ed (from the age of 14).

19. The Bridge Award - Level 1 - Requirements
SERVICE
To develop and encourage a sense of community spirit and responsibility to others
PHYSICAL RECREATION
To encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement in physical fitness and performance
SKILL
To encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills.
ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY
To encourage a spirit of adventure or discovery.
5 hours
6 hours or more over at least 2 weeks
2 months
4 hours of travel over 1 day.

20. COST In Queensland it costs $41 to apply to do the Bridge Award.
This covers both level 1 and level 2 of the award. Therefore you will only pay once if your child is in year 7 or 8.
This fee also covers your insurance, record book, certificate and badge. .

21. The Adventurous Journey - Bronze Award
We are working with Camp Fairbairn - Canoeing expedition is booked for Week 11 - Term 2 - Tuesday 21st June to Friday 24th June MAXIMUM 21 STUDENTS

22. Expedition Kit To be advised closer to the journey.
For example, rucksack and sleeping bag.

23. Cost of Adventurous Journey - Bronze
$26.40
$6.60 per day for the expertise of the Outdoor ed specialists - heavily subsidised by the Queensland Duke of Ed Program

Per student for the hire of the bus on the return journey - School bus available for the outward trip (BASED ON 15 STUDENTS ATTENDING MINIMUM) $0
No charge for accommodation - expedition tents are being provided by Camp Fairbairn dam at no cost

Workshop on basic survival skills - run by outside provider (Based on 15 students attending minimum - $300 per session)
Other costs
Food, expedition kit, appropriate footwear, etc
Approximate total cost is $150 which will be paid to the school via Parent Lounge.
Please note - an expedition kit will be required which will be of additional cost.

24. Commitments for Bronze Award
1 Afterschool and enrichment expedition training - starts Term 2
2 Being a role model in and out of school
3 Complete online record book - training will be provided for this.

25. The Adventurous Journey - Bridge Award
Great Keppel Island Bush walking day trip - date to be confirmed

26. Cost of Adventurous Journey - Bridge
$50
Ferry to Great Keppel Island
Per student for the hire of the bus - if school bus available this cost will not be included - date and time dependent.

Workshop on basic survival skills - run by outside provider (Based on 20 students attending minimum - $300 per session)
Other costs
Food, appropriate footwear, etc
Approximate total cost is $115 which will be paid to the school.

27. Getting Started START….
SPEAK with your Award Leader and Parent/Guardian about the Award
REGISTER and pay the registration fee by Friday 19th Feb 2016

Mrs Toman - Award Leader will certify your registration with the Duke of Ed office and then after this you will be able to register online for the Online Record Book.
Bridge Award students will complete a paper record book.
