BONUS XP QUESTION: Why aren’t we looking at pictures of archaeological sources and making inferences, as we usually do? Answer these questions in your books in full sentences: What does the phrase ‘The Dark Ages’ mean? What caused ‘The Dark Ages’ in Greece? What features of a civilisation ‘illuminate’ our knowledge of it? Write about what we do know about the following during the Dark Ages, and how they contributed to it being ‘dark’ : - Architecture - Burial Customs Clothing Writing 4) ie: architecture, no longer long-lasting buildings so little remains, burial customs they started cremating bodies and so no bones/bodies left to inspect, they also didn’t have many grave good for us to inspect, clothing is suggested to have been very simple, suggesting that people lost their old techniques

4 T: The Archaic Period (c.800 – 500BC) The Mediterranean flourishes
Use pages 17 – 19 of the Usborne book to help you label your map of the Mediterranean in the Archaic Period with details of the flourishing peoples who lived there at that time and what they were famous for. Either of these can be set for prep, depending on a) the level of the group and b) the amount of ground covered in lesson. It is quite important that the students have a go at the essay question on the value of archaeological evidence. It also signals the end of this part of the course, and a move towards the classical ages.

5 UNIT TASK 5: T: ‘From what you have learned from studying the Minoan, Mycenaean, Dark and Archaic ages, what do you think is the most important type of archaeological evidence and why? TASK: Give three examples of the type of archaeological evidence you have chosen and write about each one’s benefits and weaknesses. Then choose one to be your most important and say why it is. choose 3 from: friezes, architecture, writing, burial customs, pottery, mythology
