2 Ancient Greece 3000 B.C. to A.D. 395/ Important Events c. 3000 B.C. Minoan culture develops on Crete. 700-500 B.C. Greek colonists established city- states. 431-404 B.C. Athens and Sparta fight each other in the Peloponnesian war. Sparta defeats Athens A.D. 395 Greece becomes part of the east Roman empire.

4 Culture The Greeks were polytheistic. Polytheistic means they believe in more than one god. Men ran the government, women ran the home, children went to school. Women had very little freedom outside the home. The exception was in Sparta. Clothing was very simple. Greeks loved story-telling, music and plays.

5 Art and Art/History Mycenaean Art. 1550-1200 B.C. The Proto-Geometric phase 1025-900 B.C. Geometric Art 900-700 B.C. Archaic Art 700-480 B.C. Classical Art 480-323 B.C. Hellenistic Art 323-31 B.C.

6 Impact on the Modern World The Greeks invented democracy. They also invented the Olympics. Great writers like Homer, gave us insights into the ancient world.

7 Economics/Trade Agriculture was at the center of ancient Greek economy Asia Minor supplied the wheat The main crops of ancient Greece were Grapes and Olives Mediterranean Sea allowed them to trade with the surrounding countries They traded grapes, wine, olives, olive oil, and art for cotton, fruit, livestock, rice, pottery, and wheat metals were another important land resource of Greece
