Sample Answer:
Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus becomes increasingly cunning in his interactions with others, which leads to the reception of what he most desires. In Book I, Odysseus is somewhat wily during his interaction with Polyphemus. Once he intoxicates the Cyclops, he says, “Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy” ( ). This illustrates his cunning nature because he acts in deceit against the giant so that he may escape and continue his voyage home.
In Book II, it states Odysseus appears as an “old beggar” in tattered clothing, with a “gray beard” ( ). This illustrates his cunningness has increased because he has gone so far as to disguise himself in shoddy clothing to trick others into doing what he wants. For instance, since Penelope does not know he is Odysseus, she tells him how to “defeat the men who threaten his wife and kingdom” (pg. 1085). This way, he may win his wife’s heart anew. His main goal throughout the story is to return home and reunite with wife and son, which he obtains through an increasingly scheming character.
