2 Kitchen and Garden Program at Jingili Primary School
We believe that this program is a great way for students to learn broadly about healthy eating, our environment, sustainability and personal and social capabilities. Students are required to wear enclosed shoes in kitchen and garden classes and a hat in garden classes. Please let us know if your child has any allergies or diet restrictions. Please note that it is a part of our program that students try new foods.

3 Early Childhood Program
In the early childhood classes students will start to learn about expectations, procedures and the basics of the kitchen and garden classes. Meditation Students participate in a Smiling Mind Meditation. Students are learning different methods for positive mental health and well being. The meditation helps students to be calm (controlling their bodies) and focussed in class. Reading a book Students read and discuss a book with the teacher that is relevant to the kitchen and garden program.

4 Early Childhood in the Garden
Garden classes Students begin to learn about expectations of how to behave and take care of our garden and wild life. The learning areas we focus on throughout the year are: Exploring the garden with our senses. Taking care of our garden through watering (sometimes with worm tea), weeding and mulching plants. The plant life cycle (planting seeds and seedlings and observing the changes). Reducing, recycling and re-using waste (collecting food scraps for the chickens and worms and sorting recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish correctly). Learning about the Larrakia Seasons Calendar.

5 Early Childhood in the Kitchen
Kitchen classes Students begin to learn about expectations of how to behave in the kitchen. The learning areas we focus on throughout the year are: Learning about the Larrakia Seasons Calendar. Learning about produce from the garden and ingredients in recipes. Washing hands and hygiene in the kitchen. Sitting at the table to taste. Tasting new foods and drinks and describing it. Washing dishes. Making, playing with and describing playdough. Practising knife skills (with a butter knife) with playdough. Cutting and tasting fruit.

6 Year 2 to 6 – Garden Classes
Compost/Chop and Chat/Raking Students learn about composting. They collect green matter from garden and sit and chop (and chat) with the secatuars to add to the compost. Or, students add brown matter to the compost, this can be leaves from the garden or old paper or cardboard. Wheelbarrow and Tools/Mulch/Recycling Students practice tool skills (modelled by teacher). Students will sometimes move mulch to areas of need in the garden or collect (with wheelbarrows) and sort the recycling.

7 Yr 2 to 6 – Garden Classes Seed potting/Worm Farms & Tea
Students practice making seed potting mix (2 cup compost, 1 sand, 1 coconut fibre) and planting seeds. Students also propagate plants by cuttings. Or students feed worm farms and flush with water. Students dilute worm tea and then water the garden. Garden bed/Weeding/Harvesting/Basil Pick Students take care of garden bed jobs depending on what needs to be done.

8 Yr 2 to 6 – Garden Classes Each lesson students will have the opportunity to complete different jobs and learn different skills. Each week the groups will change jobs. 9 Yr 2 to 6 – Kitchen Classes Tasting Recipe – Students are learning how to follow a recipe, and prepare a meal in the kitchen with Jodi Rose . Tea - Students are learning how to make lemongrass tea or other drinks with produce from the garden (flavoured water, juices or smoothies). Preserves/ Processing/Utensil Skills – Students are processing produce from the garden or community with different utensils and learning how to preserve it when there is a glut for later use and to reduce waste. Preserves/ Processing/Utensil Skills/Craft & Art projects – Students are learning how to reduce, reuse or recycle waste through different activites.

11 Volunteers, Donations, Working Bees and our Produce Stall.
We love to have parents/carers/loved ones involved in our program. If you’d like to help out with your child’s class, please let us know.  The program is also always willing to receive donations of food if your garden is too productive! You can become a supporter of our program financially, please ask us or the office staff for a supporters form. You can purchase our produce at school assemblies, from the front office or come and see Jodi and I in the kitchen.
