1 Substances and Mixtures
Preview with Foldable

2 Important Words to Know
Mixture – Is made of 2 or more substances. It is elements, compounds, or both that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined. Each substance in a mixture keeps its individual properties.

3 Two Types of Mixtures Heterogeneous – In this type of mixture you can see the different parts. Homogeneous – In this type of mixture the parts are evenly mixed and you can not see the different parts.

4 Important Words to Know
Solution - This is an example of a homogeneous mixture. Example – Stirring sugar into water, the sugar dissolves and you can no longer see it but you know it is there because you can taste it.

5 Important Words to Know
Colloid - This is a mixture that contains small, undissolved particles that do not settle out. It contains larger particles than a solution. The particles are still too small to be seen easily but are large enough to scatter a beam of light. Example – Fog – this is colloid that consists of water droplets in the air causing headlights on a car to scatter their beams making it difficult to see.

6 Head lights in fog.

8 Important Words to Know
Emulsion - A mixture of two or more liquids that are normally unmixable or unblendable.  They are a colloid. Example – Oil and Water

9 Examples Mixture – mixtures of sand and water or sand and iron filings, a conglomerate rock, water and oil, a portion salad, trail mix, and concrete (not cement). Substance – A single kind of matter that is pure, and has a specific set of properties. Table salt is an example as it has the same properties no matter where it comes from – an underground mine or the sea.
