1 WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
CLASSROOM NEWS Week of November 6th, 2017 Upcoming Events Monday, November 6 SAC Meeting Monday- Friday, November 20-24 Thanksgiving Break Thursday, November 30 On-site Jim Sawgrass Field Trip Testing Dates -We had a fabulous time on our first field trip last week. The students learned about owl pellets, cookie mining, nature, minerals, and we even went fishing!! Our next event will be an on-site field trip on Thursday, November 30th. We will have Native American Show with Jim Sawgrass. There will be no charge for this trip but will still need parent permission for your student to attend. Last week was a continued struggle with excessive talking and playing. It has become an interruption to not only teaching but student learning. Please talk to your Leaders about the importance of controlling side bar conversation in class. You can also check if your Leader is on task or completing their homework by looking at their Student Tracker. Student Trackers are located on the last page of their agenda. If their tracker is clear, that is a good thing.  Please sign your students trackers each week so that we know you are aware of your Leaders actions at school. Hopefully, this step will get everyone on track to do their absolute best!! Thank you for your assistance with this as we all want our students to succeed!!  -Progress Reports will be coming home within the next couple of weeks. - Since we have completed our novel Wonder, we are all excited about the movie coming out on November 17th! We have spoke, as an academy, about meeting at the movie theater to watch the movie together. More information on this event will be coming to you later this week. WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK Reading/ELA Social Studies Math Science We are beginning a new novel this week called Blood on the River Jamestown, This is a historical fiction of a boy who fought to survive in James Town, 400 years ago. It is typically a favorite among the 5th grade students. This book is perfect for our information text on Jamestown. The standards that we will continue to cover or add to will be Theme RL1.2, Point of View RL2.6 & Figurative Language. 11/10 DOL Quiz Social Studies the students will learn all about Exploration and Early Settlement of America. Which will include motivation for exploration, obstacles and accomplishments, and how colonies of North America were established. Studnets will also use their informational text (DBQ) on Jamestown. This unit goes perfectly with our new novel!! -This week in math we will begin learning about dividing whole numbers. The goal is that the students will be able to divide up to 4-digit dividends by up to 2-digit divisors. This year we will not be learning the standard algorithm (long division), instead the students will be learning other strategies that will strengthen their conceptual understanding of division. This will help them to better understand the process when they do learn long division next year in 6th grade. -This week in science we will begin our unit on energy. The students will begin to explore several different types of energy including: light, heat, sound, electrical, chemical, and mechanical energy. I am so excited to announce that this week we will also begin working on our science fair projects! Parent letters will be coming home Monday with more information about the science fair projects. In order for students to pick their topic, they will need to return the permission slip attached to the parent letter. We will not be allowing duplicate projects so the topics will be picked on a first come first serve basis. 11/10 Science Topic Due 11/13 Science Fair Questions Due “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself."
