2 Haiku Haiku poems are generally written to describe nature.
The most widely recognized form consists of a three-line stanza that has a total of 17 syllables, written in the following pattern: Line 1: 5 syllables Clouds float slowly by Line 2: 7 syllables Fluffy, lumpy, cotton balls Line 3: 5 syllables Silver, gray, and white

Autumn leaves must fall What is the subject of this poem? Identify the nouns in this poem. Identify the verbs in this poem. Identify the adjectives in this poem.

5 Brainstorm With a partner, brainstorm nature-related topics.
You both must record your answers on a piece of looseleaf.

6 Choose a Topic Choose one of your nature-related topics.
Brainstorm words and phrases that describe that topic. Write your ideas on a piece of looseleaf.

7 Writing Haiku Using your topic and list of descriptive words and phrases, write a haiku. Please remember: First line: 5 syllables Second line: 7 syllables Third line: 5 syllables Your poem should create a visual image about your topic.

8 Haiku Comic Strips Haiku poems create visual images. Some writers choose to write haiku in the form of a comic strip.
