Figure 2 | Physiological changes in the renal system in pregnancy. The kidney undergoes structural, haemodynamic, tubular and endocrine changes during pregnancy. In addition, systemic effects in pregnancy are mediated by changes to the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) and vasopressin. Relaxin, progesterone and nitric oxide are hypothesized to play a part in mediating the haemodynamic changes in the kidney.
