2 The Spanish Armada L.O. To judge how useful sources are to tell us about the outcome of the Spanish Armada. By the end of this lesson… ALL OF US will be able to extract information from a source. (SO1) EVEN BETTER IF you can make comments on the usefulness and reliability of a source. (SO2) EXCELLENT IF you can give specific reasons why a source is/n’t useful. (SO3) CHALLENGE!!! CAN YOU SUE YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE TO EXPLAIN AT LEAST ONE REASON WHY A SOURCE IS/N’T USEFUL RELIABLE. (SO4/5)

3 Watch this clip and see if you can identify the key events of the Spanish Armada and why it happened.

4 Why did the Spanish want to attack England?
Sir Francis Drake catches up with the Spanish and attacks them with fireships - old, empty ships filled with straw and set alight, they sail towards the Spanish who panic when they see them and get hit. The Spanish arrive in Calais 5 August 1588 and they wait for the other Spanish soldiers from the Spanish Netherlands to arrive but they don't show up! The Spanish flee around Scotland, but a sudden storm batters their ships near Ireland. Frightened by the fireships, the Spanish scatter across the North sea, but the fast English ships attack again and again. 1) 170 ships set out from Lisbon sailing together in a crescent shape which the English would find difficult to attack. The Spanish are spotted off Cornwall on 29 July The English launch their ships and got to chase the Spanish through the channel but don't sink a single ship. Nearly every Spanish ship is damaged and the sailors begin to starve and the injured die from wounds. Some ships sink, but the few survivors who swim ashore are attacked by the Irish. From what you have just watched, can you put these key events in chronological order? Why did the Spanish want to attack England? 10 minutes

5 Create a spider diagram of key reasons why the English won the battle.
Philip said to be too proud and was arrogant, and he refused to listen to anyone else’s advice. The Spanish got caught in a terrible storm. Strong winds and rain forced many Spanish ships onto the coast of Ireland, so they could not make it home. The English had excellent cannons, but they only worked when the Spanish ships were close by. The English ships were better built and easier to manoeuvre. They were much better equipped. Francis Drake, the commander of the British Fleet, had a good knowledge of the weather and told the British to let Spanish sail into the storm as that would finish them off. Once the armada scattered, they were no longer in their strong crescent formation, and so they were an easy target for the English artillery. The Spanish tried to sail close to the English ships so their soldiers could board them and fight! But the English ships were too quick for them and could easily keep their distance. Create a spider diagram of key reasons why the English won the battle. Francis Drake, the commander of the British Fleet, had a good knowledge of the weather and told the British to let Spanish sail into the storm as that would finish them off. Create a table with two headings: Reasons why the English won. Reasons why the Spanish lost. Philip had made a plan that he ordered the Spanish to follow. They could not make use of any advantages and had to do what he said no matter what. What was the most important reason for the outcome of this battle? Give explanation to support you answer.

6 Source A, J. Oliphant, author of; A History of England. (1920)
“Though the English ships were smaller and fewer than those opposed to them, they were better built and better manned… their skilful use of artillery gave them a great advantage.” Source A, J. Oliphant, author of; A History of England. (1920) How useful and reliable is source A to an historian investigating why the English beat the Spanish Armada? Try to discuss: Why the source is useful. (What does it tell us?) Why is the source not very useful. (What doesn’t it tell us? How reliable the source is. Judgement. (SO4/5)
