Obtain license/endorsements as soon as you can!!!!-Regardless of other plans (grad school, Peace Corp, raise a family, etc). Not protected at all against ISBE changes Other state licensure will likely hinge on Illinois licensure first

3 Applying for license Log onto your student portal
Can apply even IF you haven’t yet passed all tests Log onto your student portal Under “Prior to Licensure” and then under “Licensure Application” click on “Click here to apply” App will ask if your are registered for or previously done student teaching. If you have to answer no, You should not proceed. Click “submit” Click on “Click here to add a request”

Example: “I am transferring in a Political Science course (PSC 103) from Moraine Valley CC to complete the degree requirement” Signature (must “sign” stating you understand) Must click on “submit” Once you submit, you can’t go back. Don’t try to submit a second application. Contact us for changes/corrections.

6 After you have submitted your application:
CoTE will send an early the next day to let you know your application has been received. If you feel you’ve done something in error or want to add something, contact us. You cannot go back online to revise. Don’t submit a second application.

7 Early in the semester you are finishing I will complete an initial audit to ensure you are on track
You should receive an with the list of endorsements we plan to recommend you for If the list is different than what you expected (wrong endorsements or incomplete list), contact me. If you don’t, I’ll assume it is correct. Don’t freak out if one of your friend receives the before you do. I audit applications in the order I receive them.

8 Final Audit: A few things we’ll be looking for:
Approved Student Teaching Time Report Be accurate and fairly thorough. Only record we will have of your Student teaching. Departmental recommendation from Jay’s office Be patient as he has a LOT of candidates to review Tests Content test (before student teaching EdTPA Degree Be sure to apply for graduation Your degree must appear on transcripts (ISBE requirement) in order for us to recommend you for licensure.

9 Recommending you to ISBE
If you are taking a summer teaching job, or are graduating in August and are taking a job in the fall, you should contact your LAS records officer and request your degree be posted on the first “run.” (there are 4 postings). Recommending you to ISBE Depends on when we can verify everything is complete May graduates Should occur late May to middle June. August graduates Middle to very late in August

10 (Have a VISA or MASTERCARD ready for payment)
We will contact you at the address you provided in your application (Don’t use your UIUC address) Our will provide a link to the ELIS/Educator Credentials site and basic instructions Here is a link to an ISBE “how to” tutorial: (under “How to Apply for Entitlement”) (Have a VISA or MASTERCARD ready for payment) Be sure to use your already established ELIS account. DON’T create a new/different account. Be sure the endorsements which are listed are accurate and complete before completing the process. If not, contact me immediately. Endorsements can be added afterwards but ISBE will charge you.

11 License registration BE SURE TO register your license.
If you do not register it, after 6 months it will become “lapsed.” On the home page, on the right hand side of your ELIS home page there is an “Action Center” Select “Registration” Register with the district where you plan to work or live Can move it later as necessary

12 ISBE no longer mails out paper “licenses” so don’t expect one.
ELIS provides a means for printing your credentials Interested parties can do a public search of your qualifications (in the ELIS/Educator Credentials screen)

13 Professional Educator License (PEL)
What you will have: Professional Educator License (PEL) Endorsed in at least one subject. Some schools/districts will have antiquated nomenclature on their applications. If so, tell them you are completing an initial type-09 certificate.

14 Other states Likely will require licensure in Illinois first
Other states may have program verification form. Send to us (COTE) to fill out. We’ll either send it immediately or hold it until we can fill it out. We have little information about licensure in other state so just contact the respective state. Contact information for other states is on our website under “Links” and then “United States Teacher Licensure offices Offices”

15 Adding endorsements later
You may add High School endorsements any time during your teaching career. If ALL the courses for an endorsement are completed at UIUC (or articulated directly as equivalents by UIUC), contact us and we may be able recommend you. (ISBE will still charge (a) fee(s) but will likely be faster if you go through CoTE) May also apply through ISBE
