2 What is it? A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome A nervous disorder characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks Most commonly seen with anxiety disorder A lot of times self-diagnosed

3 Possible Signs of Anxiety
Excessive worry Stage Fright Sleep Problems Self-Consciousness Lying awake worried, or agitated Panic attacks More commonly than not Flashbacks of a disturbing events Irrational Fears Perfectionism Muscle Tension Compulsive behaviors Constant clenching of jaw, etc. Self-doubt Chronic indigestion constantly

4 Who can have anxiety? Anybody can have anxiety
Infants and toddlers have been known to suffer from extreme separation anxiety from the mother/father or another family member Lasts days to months, or until child overcomes fear of certain person leaving Child will sometimes cry until passing out or vomiting if anxious enough

5 Who actually suffers from anxiety?
Everyone close to the person that has anxiety suffers along with them It is not easy to watch someone you love be anxious and nervous, over and over again for what appears to be no reason If you are close enough, you are losing sleep with them as they stay awake having anxious thoughts or attacks When they go to doctor or ER visits, you are usually missing school or work to attend with them.

7 Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Think about their imperfections for several hours a day Obsess and worry to where they won’t leave their house in fear others will notice these imperfections 1 in 50 people have Body Dysmorphic Disorder Do not believe when others tell them they look beautiful, handsome, or fine

8 Hoarding Everything is typically a mess and disorganized
When people excessively save things that others would deem worthless Ex. Newspaper from every day since 1943 The person experiences a panic attack at the mere thought of throwing them away Everything is typically a mess and disorganized

9 Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors that the person feels the urge to repeat over and over Chronic, long-lasting Higher risk of developing OCD if a parent, sibling or child has it

10 Post-Partum Anxiety When the new mother feels anxious, unsafe, or threatened for unexplained reasons Typically a fear of the baby dying Won’t sleep until she passes out Won’t let the baby out of her sight Sometimes goes days without bathing or even eating Fear of the baby being taken from her won’t accept help, not even from dad

11 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Disorder that somebody develops after experiencing a shocking, scary, or dangerous event Sometimes skittish, jumpy, and refuse to be in crowds Also sometimes avoid certain genders, loud noises, and rooms without more than one exit Can be caused from being in the military, rape, kidnapping, a fire, car accident, shooting, abuse, etc.

12 Social Anxiety Disorder
Intense anxiety or fear of being judged, negatively evaluated, or rejected in a social or performance situation Affects approximately 15 million adults 2nd most diagnosed anxiety

13 Do you think that you or somebody you know has anxiety?
Talk to your doctor Talk to the school counselor if it’s a student Reach out to your family member If it’s a teacher, reach out to them and see if you can help Encourage them to talk to their doctor Reach out to the guidance counselor if the teacher won’t seek help and it is interfering with his/her students
