What are the main organs in the nervous system?

4. Nervous System
A pathway in which your brain sends and receives info about what is happening in and around the body
Main organs are: brain, spinal cord, and nerves (made of neurons)
Consists of 2 systems:
Central and Peripheral Nervous system

5. Central Nervous System
Made up of brain and spinal cord
Brain controls all body functions by sending and receiving messages up and down spinal cord through the nerves

6. Brain Soft spongy mass of nerve cells
Made up of 3 parts that work together but have different functions
Cerebrum (red, green, yellow, blue)
Cerebellum (purple)
Brain Stem (gray)

7. Cerebrum
Largest part of brain that uses information from our senses to tell us what is going on and how to respond
Divided into 4 lobes-
Frontal- reasoning, planning
Parietal- movement, balance
Occipital- visual processing
Temporal- auditory, memory

8. Cerebellum Located under the cerebrum in back of brain
Controls balance and complex actions like walking

9. Brainstem Connects brain to spinal cord
Controls hunger and thirst, as well as body temperature, blood pressure, and breathing

10. Spinal Cord
Important structure that acts as an interstate between the brain and body
Forms 31 pairs of spinal nerves that contain motor and sensory fibers sending information from brain to body and body back to brain, important for all body movements and function

11. Peripheral Nervous System
Carries messages to and from body to the central nervous system through nerves
Carries out orders from the brain
Made of 2 systems
Somatic and Autonomic Nervous Systems

12. Somatic Nervous System
Sends info through nerves to the central nervous system from your senses and sends info back to your senses in order for them to respond
Example: Putting your hand on something hot and causing you to pull away

13. Autonomic Nervous System
Makes sure involuntary processes in your body work automatically without thinking
Breathing, digesting, heart beating

14. Neurons (Nerve Cells)
Carry messages through an electrochemical process
Brain contains 100 billion neurons
Messages are carried to and from central and peripheral nervous systems through nerves (bundles of neurons)

15. Anatomy of a Neuron Soma- cell body
Dendrites- brings signals towards the soma
Axon- takes information away from the soma
Synapse- a gap that separates axon of one cell and dendrite of another cell, messages or impulses crosses the synapse

16. Different Neurons
Sensory Neurons- carries impulses to spinal cord and brain from a muscle or gland
Interneuron- found in spinal cord, acts as a connector
Motor Neuron- nerve that carries impulses from the brain or spinal cord back to a muscle or gland, causes muscle to move or gland to produce hormones

A Rebus Story- Tell me a story about how a nerve impulse travels through the nervous system. Be sure to draw a picture in place of major words.
Song/Rap- Write a song or rap about the nervous system to help people remember its parts. Nothing inappropriate
Tri-Fold Brochure- on the three inside panels include information about all of the parts of the nervous system. HAS TO INCLUDE PICTURES AND COLOR!!!
