1 MLA Format Instructions for Word 2007. CLASS SET!
1st Insert -> Page Number. Choose “Plain Number 3” 2nd Before the page number, type your last name and a space. 3rd Highlight everything in the header (lastname and page number). Change the font to 12 point, Times New Roman. 4th Click out of the header and onto the page. Change the font on the page to 12 point, Times New Roman.

5th Double-space the page. Click the “Paragraph” “Line Spacing” and select “Line Spacing Options” 6th “Spacing” should read “0 pt” before & after. “Line spacing” should read “Double” (see image below). 7th – Margins should be set at 1” all around, but double check this. 8th – You are ready to start typing. First, type your heading. The date should be the due date, not today’s date. Give your essay a title (you may want to wait until you’re finished). Center the title. Be sure to change your text alignment back to “left” after typing the title. Read the brief paragraphs in the sample below…

MLA Format Instructions. Pay extra attention to the last bullet “Parenthetical Citations” 1” margins (top, bottom, left, right) Double-space everything. Complete heading - The heading is NOT in the header. Last name and page number as header (upper right) Font – 12 point, Times New Roman. Title your assignment on the first line after your heading. Your title will be in plain font, not bolded or italicized. Do not put quotation marks around your title. If you put the title of the story in your title, you will put that in quotation marks only. Indent the first line of each paragraph. Use the “Tab” key for this. Return only once after each paragraph. If you return (press “enter”) twice, you will no long be double-spacing. Parenthetical Citations. At the end of a sentence where you have embedded a quote, you must cite your source for the quote. If you are using a quote from “The Devil and Tom Walker” or “The Fall of the House of Usher,” you must include the author’s last name and page number. For example: Poe begins his story with the narrator traveling on a “soundless day in the autumn of the year” to his friend’s house (Poe 412). If you are using a quote from “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment,” just put the author’s name in parentheses since there is no page number. For example: The setting of “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” is the doctor’s study, which was “festooned with cobwebs” and covered with dust (Hawthorne).
