Being a Writer

Being a Writer

Being a Writer The Writing process and craft is central to the Being a Writer program. Students in grades K–2 have many opportunities to draw and tell their stories and to see writing modeled. They will also informally draft, revise, and publish their writing. In grades 3–5, students repeatedly engage in the cycle of prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing, and sharing from the Author’s Chair as they participate in the genre units.

Being a Writer Teachers use genre units to teach writing.
Students hear, read, and discuss good examples of each of these genres. They spend the later weeks of each genre unit revising, proofreading, publishing, and sharing their pieces from the Author’s Chair.

Being a Writer Language skills, grammar, usage, and mechanics resources align with instruction in the Being a Writer program and are introduced at relevant points in the writing process. Because students’ motivation to learn the conventions of written English grows out of their desire to communicate clearly with their readers in their published pieces, the skill instruction occurs mostly in the revision and proofreading phases of the writing process. Different skills and conventions are taught, as appropriate, in each genre unit.

Being a Writer Research has proven that when students feel connected to their school and their peers, they perform better academically, are more motivated to achieve, and exhibit helpful behaviors toward others. The Being a Writer program outlines specific social goals and skills to help students develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning and behavior, empathy and motivation to help others, and a desire to understand and respect differences among people. Being a Writer cultivates a classroom writing community in which students work in pairs, in groups, and as a class to listen to and discuss writing, brainstorm ideas for writing, and share their writing with one another.
