2 Jacques Lacan April 13,1901-September 9,1981 Paris, France
French Psychoanalyst Psychiatrist Influenced by Freud’s Theories on Psychoanalysis, and Saussure’s Structuralism Jacques Lacan was born in Paris, France on April 13, 1901 and lived till September 9, He was a French Psychoanalyst and Psychiatrist. He was influenced by Freud’s theories on Psychoanalysis and Saussere’s Structuralism

3 Jacques Lacan Influence on Literature
by concentrating on the unconscious desire within the text. Lacan suggested that the unconscious is structured like language the unconscious is a source of real truth His influence on literature was that by concentrating on the unconscious desire within the text he suggested that the unconscious is structured like language, and that the unconscious is a source of real truth. The unconscious is a structure it has rules, it functions in the way that language functions. The unconscious is in what we do and what we say.

4 Jacques Lacan Belief that the human psyche is divided into 3 main structures that control our lives and desires The Real The Imaginary Order The Symbolic Order He believed that the human psyche is divided into three main structures that control our lives and desires. These are The Real, The Imaginary Order, and The Symbolic Order

5 Jacques Lacan The Real the closest we are to the real is before language we are in a state of fullness, completeness a state of nature from which we have been forever broken off by our entrance into language a state of need our entrance into language marks the separation from the real During the real we are considered the closest to the real before we learn language. This is when we are in a state of fullness and completeness. This is a state of nature from which we are forever broken off by our entrance to language. We are now in a state of need. Our entrance into language marks the separation of the real. We now suffer the loss of the state of fullness and completeness by learning language. We now identify ourselves through language.

6 Jacques Lacan The Imaginary Order
The fundamental narcissism by which the human subject creates fantasy images of both himself and his ideal object of desire We start to make representations of how the world works we create scenarios, goals, and ideologies which help us cope with the loss we experience during the “Real Stage” marks the movement from need to demand corresponds to mirror stage The second structure is the imaginary order which is the fundamental narcissism by which the human subject creates fantasy images of both himself and his ideal object of desire. We start to make representations of how the world works, we create scenarios, goals, and ideologies which help us cope with the loss we experience during the real stage. This marks the movement from need to demand. It corresponds to the mirror stage.

7 Jacques Lacan Mirror Stage Child’s identification with his own image happens between 6-18 months of age this marks the first recognition of one’s self as I, at a point before entering language the child realizes he is no longer the mother but someone else depression and anxiety sets in we start to look for our identity we start to mirror someone we wish to become as an adult ex: father, mother, idol During the mirror stage the child identifies with his own image this usually happens between 6-18 months of age, this marks the first recognition of ones self as I at a point before entering language. The child realizes he is no longer the mother but someone else. Depression and anxiety sets in and we start to look for our identity. We start to mirror someone we wish to become as an adult. for example mother, father, idol or role model.

8 Jacques Lacan Symbolic Order Language and narrative
Once a child enters language and accepts the rules of society, it is able to deal with others acceptance of the Name-of-the-Father Rules and restrictions that control both your desire and the rules of communication The third structure is Symbolic order which is language and narrative. Once a child enters language and accepts the rules of society, it is able to deal with others. There is an acceptance of the Name-of-the-Father which are rules and restrictions that control both your desire and the rules of communication.

9 Jacques Lacan When we suffer the loss of identity during the Real stage we will never fill our void. The loss that we experience during the Real stage will haunt us forever. We will always seek more to fill the void. For example, the basketball player will always seek to practice to become a better player, even when success is achieved. Humans are always in search of identity after the loss of it during the “Real Stage” when we learn language. Because we suffer the loss of identity during the real stage we will never fill our void. The loss that we experience will haunt us forever. We will always seek more to fill the void. For example the basketball player will always seek to practice to become a better player, even when success is achieved. Humans are always in search of identity after the loss of it during the real stage when we learn language.
