1 Bellwork Day 3 – Which metaphor best characterizes how Americans viewed the universe during the Enlightenment? The universe is a flower: it emerges from a seed, blooms, and dies The universe is a soul: its workings are invisible and impervious to science The universe is a tree: its roots are hidden, but its design is beautiful The universe is a clock: its components work perfectly and can be analyzed.

3 Proclamation of 1763 and French and Indian war
Go back to 1A and add events to Map. French and Indian War Date: What was it? Colonists helped Britain defeat French and N.Am in war Cause: Increase Land/territory Impact: Britain needed money to pay for war expenses and Taxed colonists Proclamation of 1763- Date: 1763 What was it?: Boundary/ border line Cause: French and Indian War Impact: This prohibited the colonists from settling beyond the Appalachian Mountains.

5 Stamp Act- 1765 Date: 1765 What was it?-This required taxes on all paper products including playing cards, newspapers, and marriage licenses Cause: To pay Britain’s war debt Impact: Boycott of paper products- King loses money

6 Boston Massacre 1770 Date: 1770 What was it? The colonists and British soldiers had a gun fight in Boston. 7 colonists were killed. Cause: “No taxation without representation” Impact: *This event was an example of British cruelty toward the colonists.

7 Tea Act- Boston Tea Party- 1773
What was it?:King insisted the colonists only by Tea from the British East India Tea company with high prices Cause: to help the failing company get more $ Boston Tea Party What is it: A group of colonists disguised as Indians dumped tea overboard from ships in Boston Harbor. Cause: Tea Act

8 Intolerable Act-1774 Date: 1774
What was it: Outlawing town meetings (local gov’t) and Closing the Boston Harbor (no trade for colonists) Cause: Boston Tea Party Impact: Punishment for Colonists that drove them to write the Declaration of Independence

9 Why declaration of independence?
Go back to your 1C Declaration of Independence Handout Annotate the Declaration of independence. Use a highlighter to identify the economic and political grievances(complaints) of the colonists about the king Write in the margin which event the writers of the Declaration were referring to from the chart.

10 Is Every Colonist FOR Independence?
Not every colonist was for breaking away from Great Britain – many merchants relied on Britain for trade and commerce Those for Independence turned to pamphlets and writings to convince the colonists to support independence Two examples of Propaganda: Boston Massacre engraving Thomas Pain’s Common Sense
