2 Why do we have language? To express our wishes, feelings, likes, dislikes, and ideas. To change our worlds: “I now pronounce you…” “Shut up!” “Hey, did you hear…” To share knowledge. To set down learning. To store knowledge for future generations. To learn about experiences we’d otherwise never have.

Communication through symbols which are arranged based on a set of rules (grammar). speaking/listening writing/reading

4 What is psycholinguistics?
Theories that help us understand How the brain and sensory receptors make meaning of language. How and why we communicate. PSYCHOLOGY OF LANGUAGE

recognition that letters of the alphabet (symbols or signs) represent sounds; symbols are blended to make written words. Morphemes: meaning units Syntax: arrangement of words and phrases Semantics/Semiotics: relationship between language and what is being represented
