1 Introduction to Scatter Plots

2 Table of Contents 41: How Do I Graph Scatter Plots? 40: Warm-Up, Guided Practice

3 Warm-Up Using the two points, write a linear equation:
(3, 2) and (4, 0) 2. (0, 6) and (0, -6) 3. (-4, 2) and (4, 9)

4 Learning Intention/Success Criteria
LI: We are learning to graph scatter plots SC: I know how to -graph ordered pairs -distinguish between the 3 types of correlation -describe correlation of scatter plots in context

5 EQ: How Do I Graph Scatterplots?
11/17/2018

6 Point The pair of numbers giving the location of a point on a coordinate plane. Written in the format: (x, y) X-Axis The horizontal axis The axis for the independent variable

7 Y-Axis The vertical axis The axis for the dependent variable Scatterplot A graph of paired data in which the data values are plotted as (x, y) points The ordered pairs do not have to be in a straight line

8 Positive Correlation As one set of data increases, the other set of data increases The data follows the pattern from the lower left to the upper right of the graph

9 Negative Correlation As one set of data increases, the other set of data decreases The data follows the pattern from the upper left to the lower right of the graph

10 No Correlation The data points are not related The data does not follow a pattern The data is all over the graph in no general shape

11 Time Reading (Hours) Pages Read 3.4 275 4.5 324 2.5 189 2.75 202 236
Example 1: The table represents the relationship between the number of pages read in a book and time spent reading. Label the axis and plot the points. Time Reading (Hours) Pages Read 3.4 275 4.5 324 2.5 189 2.75 202 236 5.3 357 2.2 148

12 360 300 240 Pages Read 180 120 60 1 2 3 4 5 6 Time Reading (Hours)

13 What type of correlation does the scatterplot have
What type of correlation does the scatterplot have? How do you know this? a) Positive Correlation b) Negative Correlation c) No Correlation

14 Explain the relationship between the number of hours spent reading and the number of pages read.

15 Explain the relationship between the number of hours spent reading and the number of pages read.
As the number of hours spent reading increases, the number of pages read also increases

16 Guided Practice 1 The table represents the percent of compact cars sold since On a coordinate grid, plot the data and answer the questions.

17 Guided Practice 1 Continued
Year (Since 1995) Sales (% of Compact Cars) 12.5 2 12.2 4 11.3 6 12.1 8 10 10.8 12 10.4

18 Guided Practice 1 Cont. 12.5 12 11.5 11 Sales Percentage 10.5 10 2 4 6

19 Guided Practice 1 Cont. What type of correlation does the scatterplot have? How do you know this? a) Positive Correlation b) Negative Correlation c) No Correlation

20 Guided Practice 1 Cont Explain the relationship of the scatter plot.

21 Guided Practice 2 The table represents the elevation of mountains and the amount of rain it receives. On the coordinate grid, plot the points and answer the questions. Elevation (ft) 20 66 118 82 50 200 158 Rain (in) 49 59 41 45 10 56 21
