1 Weather Factors Air Pressure Heat Wind Water

2 Where does heat come from?
The sun Three forms: Visible light Infrared radiation Ultraviolet radiation

3 Heat We measure the amount of heat by measuring the temperature of an object. Temperature- the average amount of energy of particles in motion

4 Temperature is measured with a...
Thermometer

5 Scales Fahrenheit Celsius
Freezing point of water 32 degrees Fahrenheit Boiling point of water 212 degrees Fahrenheit What is the boiling point of water in Celsius? What is the freezing point of water in Celsius?

6 Conversions 0 degrees Celsius degrees Celsius

7 Heat Heat is transferred 3 ways Radiation Conduction Convection

8 ? RADIATION How does heat energy get from the Sun to the Earth?
There are no particles between the Sun and the Earth so it CANNOT travel by conduction or by convection. RADIATION ?

9 Radiation Direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Energy can travel in a vacuum Can’t see radiation, but feel it as heat

10

11 Conduction The direct transfer of heat from one object to another.
Fast moving molecules bump into slower ones and transfer energy. The closer the molecules are in a substance, the more effective heat is conducted. Conduction works well in some solids (metals), but not as well in liquids (water) or gases (air).

12 Convection Transfer of heat in a liquid or gas.
As particles move their energy goes along with them.

13 Heating the Troposphere
Radiation, conduction, and convection all work together to heat the troposphere. How?

14 Radiation heats Earth’s surface, land warms air close to the ground through conduction, warm air rises to create convection cycle.

15

16 1. Which of the following is not a method of heat transfer?

17 2. In which of the following are the particles closest together?
A. Solid B. Liquid C. Gas D. Fluid

18 3. How does heat energy reach the Earth from the Sun?
