6 What do we expect of care services?
Must have formal mechanisms like a Participation / Involvement Strategy and Action Plan - to demonstrate how people who use care services are involved and able to influence how their care is delivered. This should be implemented and reviewed both in care planning, reviews and in considering how the service is managed. It is expected that services demonstrate how they meaningfully involve people in the self assessment and grading of their service. People should be able to influence how their care is delivered. Formal mechanisms for doing this should be implemented and reviewed both in care planning, reviews and in considering how the service is managed. It is expected that services involve people in the recruitment and training of care staff. The nature of grading means that services must evidence this and the outcomes of involvement. They will get lower grades if they don't. In terms of ops, lay assessors are involved in inspections. We are looking at reviewing the way we register and inspect services, through the involvement of people who use services.

7 Examples of good practice – care services with good grades have:
Involved residents in staff recruitment and assessments Given residents more say in personal plans Asked residents and relatives to grade the service Held regular residents meetings Trained staff in participation issues Elected a spokesperson to talk to Care Commission Officers
