1 Heredity Questions Right Side of Journal

2 Heredity Questions 1. In your own words, describe heredity.
2. Describe 5 traits that you. 3. In your own words, describe what a GENE is. 4. Briefly describe how you acquired (received) your GENES. 5. When describing genes, how do scientists represent genes on chromosomes? 6. Explain the difference between a GENOTYPE and a PHENOTYPE. 7. Blue eyes are considered a RECESSIVE trait. How would it be possible for blue eyes to be shown as the PHENOTYPE for new offspring? 8. An organism has white fur and blue eyes. Is the previous statement describing the genotype or phenotype of this organism?

3 1. In your own words, describe heredity.
When parents pass on their DNA to their children.

4 2. Describe 5 traits that you.
Examples: Brown hair/Blonde Hair Brown eyes/Blue Eyes Short/Tall Freckles/No freckles Straight Hair/Curly Hair

5 3. In your own words, describe what a GENE is.
Segments of DNA that determine our characteristics

6 4. Briefly describe how you acquired (received) your GENES.
We receive our genes from our parents. Each parent gives their child a set of genes.

7 5. When describing genes, how do scientists represent genes on chromosomes?
Scientists represent genes using letters. Dominant alleles are capital letters, recessive alleles are lowercase.

8 6. Explain the difference between a GENOTYPE and a PHENOTYPE.
Your genotype is the DNA you receive from your parents that determines your phenotype. Genotype is your genes and phenotype is your observable traits.

9 7. Blue eyes are considered a RECESSIVE trait
7. Blue eyes are considered a RECESSIVE trait. How would it be possible for blue eyes to be shown as the PHENOTYPE for new offspring? The person would need two copies of the recessive allele. No dominant alleles for eye color are present in the person’s DNA.

10 8. An organism has white fur and blue eyes
8. An organism has white fur and blue eyes. Is the previous statement describing the genotype or phenotype of this organism? Why? The statement is describing the phenotype, because it is describing characteristics that we can see/observe.

11 Reflection (Left Side)
Write a paragraph including all of the following: how genotype and phenotype are different How genotype leads to phenotype Give an example of one of your genotypes and phenotypes How do these relate to heredity
