Even though the hurricane has destroyed the bridge and has made crossing the river very dangerous, Gustus does not turn back. (CONTEXT) Covered in bruises, afraid, and exhausted, he finds the strength to push, claw, and fight his way across the river to reach his tree. His refusal to back down proves his determination.
