Recording Identifiers for Manifestations
Descriptive Cataloging with RDA Recording Identifiers for Manifestations Now we proceed to the last area of the catalog, where we record our identifiers (usually ISBNs) and terms of availability (usually price). core element

Title page Title page verso ISBN: Here the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is printed on the title page verso.

RDA , Recording Identifiers for Manifestations If there is a specified display format for the identifier for the manifestation (e.g., ISBN, ISSN, URN), record it using that format. Recording Terms of Availability Record the terms on which the resource is available. These terms consist of: the price (recorded in numerals with standard symbols) if the resource is for sale or a brief statement of other terms if the resource is not for sale. [LC practice: Generally do not provide prices or other availability information except for rental scores or rental performance materials. ] : ‡c $25.00 245 _ _ Hot air : ‡b all talk, all the time / ‡c Howard Kurtz. First edition. 264 □ 1 New York : ‡b Times Books, ‡c [1996]. viii, 407 pages ; ‡c 25 cm text ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡2 rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (pages ) and index. We record the ISBN in MARC field On a catalog card, we record that it is an ISBN and then record the number with the hyphens. In a MARC record, the fact that this is an ISBN is handled by being in the 020 field so we don’t say ISBN and we omit the hyphens. Make sure you record the entire ISBN. In an ISBN the last digit is actually a “check digit.” Meaning that an algorithm was applied to the first nine digits to produce the tenth digit. This allows the some systems to make sure that the ISBN has been entered accurately. Sometimes an ISBN can have an X as the check digit. Be sure to include the X when you record the ISBN. RDA also says to include the terms of availability. This is usually the price, including an indication as to whether the price is listed in dollars, euros, yens, etc. The terms of availability are recorded in subfield c, preceded by a space-colon-space. Library of Congress generally does not add the terms of availability.

Title page Title page verso Sometimes a work will have more than one ISBN: one for the hardback version and one for the paperback version. Or one for the individual volume and one for the set.

Zoom In this case we have an ISBN for the hardback and one for the paperback.

RDA Qualification If the resource has more than one identifier of the same type, record a brief qualification after the identifier. Example: ISBN (pbk.) Qualifier is abbreviated on the source of information (pbk.) : ‡c $22.50 : ‡c $49.95 _ _ Andrew Carnegie / ‡c Joseph Frazier Wall. 264 □ 1 Pittsburgh, Pa. : ‡b University of Pittsburgh Press, ‡c [1989]. xiii, 1137 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : ‡b illustrations ; ‡c 25 cm text ‡2 rdacontent unmediated ‡2 rdamedia volume ‡2 rdacarrier Originally published: New York : Oxford University Press, 1970. Includes bibliographical references and index. We are allowed to record both ISBNs in our record. Generally we would record the ISBN for the item we have in hand first, followed by the ISBN for the work published in another format. Note that the 020 field is repeatable. Each ISBN is recorded in its own 020 field.
