Building the Infrastructure for Continuous Improvement: A MedBiquitous Update Peter S. Greene, M.D., Executive Director May 16, 2016

2 MedBiquitous Mission To develop and promote technology standards for the health professions that advance lifelong learning, continuous improvement, and better patient outcomes.  Not-for-profit, member-driven, standards development organization

3 What do I mean by standard?
Technical specification Lingua franca Enables data exchange and interoperability Very open license

4 Building the Foundation: The MedBiquitous Architecture
* Official ANSI Standards

5 Selected Achievements
Supporting credentialing of 800,000 certified MDs & DOs $650,000 saved by the AOA in the first 2 years of CME data collection 135 medical schools in the US & Canada sending curriculum data to central system 340 virtual patients available under open access Data on ER/LA Opioid CE activities being compiled and sent to FDA

6 New Member Model 2 levels – Basic and Sustaining New pricing structure
Renewed members New members Nanyang Technological University New Innovations Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada The SALUS Group

7 Educational Achievement
In Review Documentation of competence, assessment, entrustment Funded by the AAMC and NBME Note that the Educational Achievement specification is in review within the MedBiquitous Standards Committee.

8 RPC Training Numbers 47% of target 41% of target Goal 80,000
MedBiquitous’ Medical Education Metrics, or MEMS, has enabled the compilation of Continuing Education data related to FDA regulatory action on extended release and long acting opioid medications. This is data shows the number of participants in the opioid CE courses, the number of completers, and the number of prescriber completers as of February. The FDA presented recently to an advisory committee. From Igor Cerny, FDA. Used with permission.

9 AAMC Curriculum Inventory
Thanks to the Curriculum Inventory, a wealth of data about medical school curricula in the US and Canada are now available. The AAMC Curriculum Inventory, using the MedBiq standard, allows the AAMC to publish charts describing curriculum trends on its website. There are also 47 detailed content reports available to participating schools. Terri Cameron has a workshop and a panel session describing the Curriculum Inventory in more detail.

10 The draft Financial Interest specification created in the Financial Interest Working Group is being used in the Convey system for streamlining the process of disclosing financial interests. Convey is in late stage testing and onboarding subscribers.

11 ACCME Support of Maintenance of Certification
The ACCME PARS systems is using the MedBiquitous Activity report to send data to the ABIM, ABP, and ABA. CME providers report physician completion of MOC activities meeting the part 2 requirements for these boards. Ed Kennedy and Jennifer Dunleavy from the ACCME will be presenting this important work.

12 Medcin (Medical Curriculum Innovation)
Project Aims To evaluate, map and compare medical curricula within MEFANET (Czech Republic/Slovakia) To standardise curricula within MEFANET around the OPTIMED medical curriculum management system Uses MedBiquitous standards to integrate, standardise and communicate curriculum data within the project Masaryk University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Karolinska Institutet, & St George’s, University of London 2 year EC-funded project Several of our members in Europe are working together on a European Commission funded project called Medcin, which is using the MedBiqutious Competency and Curriculum Inventory standards to help standardize curricula across medical schools in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

13 Learning Experience Working Group
Develop xAPI profiles for simulations and clinical training activities/experiences Co-chairs: David Topps, MD, University of Calgary Ellen Meiselman, University of Michigan We launched a new working group, this year, the learning experience working group, which is working to develop xAPI profiles for simulation and clinical training activities. The group is co-chaired by David Topps of university of Calgary, who is delivering the Philip Dodds memorial lecture, and Ellen Meiselman of University of Michigan. David also leads the development of open labyrinth, which is recognized as a Tin can adopter. Both David and Ellen have implemented xAPI at their institutions, and they are both presenting and co-leading a workshop at this meeting.

14 Draft API Architecture
Last year I discussed our move towards developing application programming interfaces, or APIs. The technical Steering Committee has developed a draft archicture to guide the development of MedBiquitous APIs. APIs will allow for more granular interchange of data and integration of systems.

15 API Use Case Development
Professional Profile priorities Disciplinary actions License restrictions Accreditation status Curriculum Inventory priorities Curriculum-tailored content Instructional methods/assessment methods/resources associated with a competency Here are some examples of APIs proposed within our working groups. An API could check for disciplinary action on an individual, or license restrictions. You could also have an API to check the accreditation status of a school or program. The Curriculum Inventory working group has proposed APIs to deliver curriculum tailored content and to retrieve details about how a particular competency is taught or assessed.

16 Video – Advancing Health Professions Education
MedBiquitous also released a video describing why we need standards for health professions education.
