1. W-FL BOCES Regional Economic Impact

Currently there is local and national focus on the skilled trade and technical career opportunities. Advanced Manufacturing falls under this umbrella and it has been our goal to expose our districts and students to the growing opportunities in this field. We are accomplishing this through programs such as P-Tech and some targeted CTE programs. Today I would like to talk to you about the impact these opportunities for students are having on the regional economic growth.

2. Pathways in Technology Early College High School- P-TECH
The P-TECH program is a high school/college experience for 1st generation students at risk of not graduating from high school. The P-TECH school started with a grant from NYS to create a non traditional high school/college for students struggling with traditional learning.

3. Students enter in grade 9 and take high school regents level courses at the same time that they are taking college courses from FLCC leading to a career in one of three areas: Information Technology, Instrumentation and Control Technologies or Mechanical Technologies. The W-FL P-TECH just accepted it’s 3rd cohort bringing enrollment up to 63 students from 22 school districts. P-TECH offers students an opportunity to achieve an Associate's Degree prior to their completion of the program at no cost to the student.

4. Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise (AME)

CTE students also have opportunities to choose a career path with high regional impact and unlimited growth potential when they enroll in our AME programs. Four years ago the W-FL BOCES redesigned the Welding, Pre Engineering and Precision Machining Programs which had been separate programs to provide an all encompassing program that would help students gain employment opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing and address this region's middle skills gap. With support from FAME and input from our consultant committee groups a new interdisciplinary program was created called Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME). Students receive instruction in their first year in all three areas of welding, pre engineering and precision machining. In a student's second year they can choose to specialize in one of the areas or continue to broaden their skills across all 3. In their second year all students are placed in an internship in the area that they feel strongest in. Over the course of the past four years the AME program has grown as you can see.
In an effort to create consistency across the 9 county region and within our JMT, administrators from M1, M2, GV and RCSD worked together to write a grant that would align equipment in all our AME shops assuring our business partners that any student completing our programs had a similar learning experience and consistent set of skills.

5. Summer Advanced Manufacturing Experience (SAME)
Supported by FAME and Wayne County WIB
Geared toward students completing 8-10th grades
Students earn 3 FREE college credits from MCC for course TAM 141
Students complete projects in both the machining/ welding shops and experience working with computer aided design programs (CAD)
2016 Year students from 6 districts
Funded by AT&T grant
2017 Year students from 11 districts
5 years ago the SAME program began in the M2 BOCES region with full financial support from Monroe County. Members of FAME heard about the program and felt that it should be brought to our region. W-FL BOCES agreed and began the process to bring the program here. In the summer of 2016 our first SAME cohort spent 3 weeks experiencing the machining and welding shops at both FLTCC and WTCC With the help of a grant from AT&T

The need for skilled workers doesn’t stop with P-TECH or AME. Our region has a strong need for individuals in the Health Care fields. We recognize this need and offer numerous opportunities for students to enter the healthcare workforce at varied levels of care and interest.

8. New Program Development
Farm to Table Sustainable Agriculture Academy
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
The farm to table program is designed to meet the increasing demand by agriculture for skilled workers. W-FL BOCES Farm to Table program will align curriculum across the culinary, conservation and animal science programs to offer students a comprehensive experience and deep understanding of traditional and modern agricultural practices including sustainability, organic growth and cutting edge technologies.
The feasibility for an EMT program will be explored in the year. Our local emergency response agencies have reported a decrease in trained personnel while students continue to be interested in this field but are otherwise committed to after school activities preventing them from obtaining training outside school hours. It is the hope that we could offer this opportunity and meet both the interest level and needs of our communities
