Make it So: 2020! Welcome! Together we really have grown those seeds of a vision into a shared vision for MDUUC – and a PLAN to make it so.

Last fall, at a leadership workshop I used this slide the day we check in with each other, sync, receive some coaching, and work on growing our own skills – transforming ourselves. At the PaceSetters Reception and in general feedback I’ve received I hear a lot about how the best of us is NOT changing – that we always have worked for racial justice, provided caring support for each other … which is true and the very good news. Change Means … Change

MDUUC Mission Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church is a welcoming religious community. We bring to life our Unitarian Universalist values as we: seek truth and work for justice; nurture compassion and courage; reach out to each other and to our larger community of faith; bridge the divisions that wound the human family; transform ourselves and our world. We’ve always been about seeking truth and working for justice. Whose JOB is it to ‘nurture compassion and courage?’ Everybody’s, right? We’ve always been guided by the values behind this mission. We agree on those values.

Change Means … Change Transitioning to Collaborative Governance
And as we’ve grown to a Resource-size level church – more than 350 participating weekly – we are changing though. We’re becoming – some with intense, earnest focus, are working to be better people, to rise up and even more vigilantly work for justice, eradicate racism .. Call on our better angels. And we’re well on the road – with our council structure and expanded ministry as a starting point to a more collaborative, communicative governance model appropriate to our size. Recruiting, developing council and committee leaders, chairs and conveners. Empowering them. enabling the board to do more strategic governance – it’s all interwoven. Change Means … Change Transitioning to Collaborative Governance

We have 3 big entities that govern our church: the congregation – the board of trustees it elects, and the ministry team we call and hire – 3 big entities that together, collaboratively serve the mission of the church. As you know I’m fond of saying, the board doesn’t report to the congregation. We work WITH the congregation and the ministerial team in service of the MISSION of the church.
