The U.S. was afraid that China would be carved into colonies and American traders would be shut out.

Gave U.S. the right to intervene to stabilize the economic affairs of small nations in the Caribbean and Central America if they were unable to pay their international debts.
The U.S. didn’t want European countries to come into the W. Hemisphere to collect on debts owed.

8. DOLLAR DIPLOMACY Created by President Taft
This policy used diplomacy to advance and protect American businesses in other countries.
American businesses would be drawn into Nicaragua for growing fruit & starting mining companies
Also wanted to protect Panama Canal
