1) Cult of Personality 2) Radical Ideology 3) Organization 4) Mass Mobilization and Indoctrination 5) Use of Secret Police 6) Central Control 7) Use of Terror and Violence

4 Totalitarian Leaders of the 20th Century
- The most well known totalitarian leaders of the 20th century were Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini. - Hitler ruled Germany, Stalin ruled Russia, and Mussolini Italy.

5 How They Rose to Power - Cult of Personality: “a situation in which a public figure (such as a political leader) is deliberately presented to the people of a country as a great person who should be admired and loved” - Propaganda: Many things such as posters were put up supporting and encouraging these leaders. This spread their ideas and their cause.

6 Fear and Terror - Terror was used to produce an extreme fear to paralyze the citizens into an utter lack of resistance - Hitler, Lenin, and Stalin all used terror and violence to rise to power - Terror and violence allowed radical transformation and for totalitarian leaders to maintain control over society  Stalin’s purges

7 Hitler - Totalitarian leader of Germany - Use of secret police
- Nationalism, racism, mass killings - Leader of the Nazi Party

8 Stalin - Totalitarian leader of the USSR (Russia)
- Creation of a police state - Used terror, fear, mass killings, the Gulag system - Collectivization & the 5 year plan for industrialization

9 Mussolini - Totalitarian leader of Italy - Rise of extreme fascism
- Police state, propaganda, extreme nationalism
