1 INTD 503- Materials Topic: Partition Walls
Prepared by: Dr. Mamdouh I. Zaky. University of Nizwa, Sultanate of Oman.

2 Partition wall Separates/Divides bigger rooms into smaller rooms.
Usually non-load bearing walls. Typically have an inner hidden support structure and an outer surface. Partition walls can be constructed using bricks, concrete blocks, glass blocks, sheet glass, wood, fiber cement, plaster board (drywall) etc.

3 Wood studs: Most common partition structure in non- fire proof construction. Usually 5x10cm wood studs spaced at 40cm, running from floor to ceiling are used. They provide space for pipes, wiring and ducts. Double wall with two separate sets of studs can improve acoustical isolation between spaces.

4

5 Metal studs: Gypsum block:
Steel studs are used instead of wood studs for improved fire resistance. Still provides hollow space within partition’s thickness for pipes, wiring etc. Gypsum block: A light masonry construction. Gives superior fire resistance and acoustical control. Provides a sturdy surface for plaster or other surface treatment.

6 Concrete block: Glass:
Masonry block heavier and more solid than gypsum block. Used for spaces that need good isolation such are fire stairs, elevator shafts and machinery rooms. Glass: Glass is used in partition walls along with metal or wood studs. Available in wide range of colors and textures and in shatter proof forms. Curving and angled glass walls are used to create free flowing form. Glass blocks are masonry like material which give unique translucent appearance.

7

8 Drywall: Plaster boards (120x240cm) are used to cover the studs made either of wood or steel. Plaster boards are factory made sheets made by sandwiching gypsum sheets between special heavy paper. This can be cut and nailed in place quickly and easily. Joints are covered with special tape and nail heads are covered with plaster.

9 Movable Partitions Used to create flexibility in the interior.
Allows to frequently open the walls to create larger floor area. These are factory made prefabricated systems that can be reused in new locations and arrangements.

10 Movable Partitions Types of movable partitions:
Sliding- series of panels that slide in fixed tracks Sliding & Folding- operate like a sliding folding door. Normally used for smaller spans. Screens- made of metals or timber frames are supported with legs/wheels for easy movement. Pipe and Drape- Fixed or telescopic upright and horizontal stands with removable panels.
