2 Nationalism What is it? Leads to competition for land & power
Countries want independence – like Bosnia

3 Balkans “Powder keg” b/c of many conflicts
Serbia wanted to unite Slavic ppl in 1 nation (ethnic group includes Russians) Instead, Austria-Hungary gained control of Bosnia (Slavic nation) in 1908 Angered Serbians

4 Imperialism What is it? Competing to rule the world & for resources to fuel industry Lead to colonies fighting in war making it a WORLD war (not just a Euro one)

5 Militarism Build up military
To compete, countries need strong & new weapons & large armies Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany - builds up army and navy to compete with Great Britain He said, “I and the army were born for one another.” Felt inferior & snubbed by Euro nations (often, relatives!!)

6 Alliances Ger wants to isolate France (still bitter about Franco-Prussian War) Ger forms alliances or pacts: agreements to protect each other in case of war keep France from gaining power Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, & Italy Russia was once included but Kaiser failed to keep them in it

7 Europe Divides Up Triple Entente: Great Britain, France & Russia
UK begins to find allies after Ger builds up navy NON-binding pact: did NOT have to fight Based on this map, which alliance might have an advantage if a war erupted? Why?
