1 Cardiovascular system
by: Lily Harvey, Adrianne Peech, & Alexis Beyke

2 About Most important organs: heart and blood vessels.
The system circulates blood through a network of vessels throughout the body to provide individual cells with oxygen and nutrients and helps dispose of metabolic wastes.

3

4 Fact #1 A woman’s average heart rate is faster than a man’s by 8 beats per minute.

5 Fact #2 About 8% of your body weight is blood.
Example: if you are 100 pounds you would have 8 pounds of blood.

6 A normal heart valve is about the size of a half dollar.
Fact #3 A normal heart valve is about the size of a half dollar.

7 Fact #4 Across the animal kingdom, heart rate us inversely related to body size: In general, the bigger the animal, the slower its resting heart rate. An adult human has an average resting heart rate of about 75 beats per minute, the same as an adult sheep. But the blue whale’s heart is about the size of a compact car, and only beats five times per minute. A shrew, on the other hand, has a heart rate of about 1,000 beats per minute.

8 Fact #5 A condition called stress cardiomyopathy entails a sudden, temporary weakening of the muscle of the heart (myocardium). This results in symptoms akin to those of a heart attack, including chest pain, shortness of breath, and arm aches. This condition is also commonly known as “broken heart syndrome” because it can be caused by an emotionally stressful event, such as the death of a loved one or a divorce, breakup, or physical separation from a loved one.

9 Secondary systems Skeletal: the bone marrow creates red blood cells.
Respiratory: oxygen is carried through the body by red blood cells. The muscular system because the heart is a muscle! The endocrine system because the blood carries all of the hormones throughout the body. The digestive system is responsible for taking in essential electrolytes and nutrients. The nervous system controls the involuntary beating of the heart. The reproductive system: in a woman’s 20th week of pregnancy, the amount of blood doubles. Intergumentary system: the skin protects the heart and blood vessels. The skeletal system: the rips protect the heart.

10 Lymphatic system and Immunity

11 About Most important organs: Tonsils, appendix, spleen, thymus.
This system is responsible for the removal of interstitial fluid from the tissues, as well as the absorption and transportation of fatty acids from the digestive system. White blood cells are transported to and from the lymph nodes into the bones.

12

13 Fact #1 Laughing improves resistance to disease by decreasing stress hormones and increasing immune cells.

14 Fact #2 Antibacterial products can weaken the immune system.

15 Fact #3 Dieting also weakens the immune system.

16 Fact #4 Intense endurance exercise can disrupt the immune system.

17 Fact #5 The immune system strengthens only one month after quitting smoking.

18 Secondary System Skeletal: Cells of the immune system originate in the bone marrow. The digestive system: waste is removed via the lymphatic system EVERY OTHER SYSTEM.
