What is ZYTAZE ®? ZYTAZE® is a medical food that provides nutritional support to enhance the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections in the treatment of blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm or cosmetic procedures. ZYTAZE® is exclusively available through health care professionals.

About the Inventor Charles Soparkar, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Soparkar’s Houston based practice, Plastic Eye Surgery Associates, has been administering Botox®* since 1985. Allergan states that their practice purchases and uses more Botox®* than any other oculoplastic practice. Dr. Soparkar previously served as Chief of Ophthalmic Oncology and Oculoplastic Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Boston University Medical Center, and Lahey-Hitchcock Clinic. Dr. Soparkar received both his Ph.D. in molecular biochemistry and his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts. *Disclaimer: Botox® is a registered trademark of Allergan, Inc. Botulinum Toxin & Zinc To be effective, each botulinum toxin molecule must be associated with a molecule of zinc. Without zinc, the otherwise powerful toxins have little or no effect. Botulinum toxins are made by bacteria in a laboratory, collected, purified, and then processed into a fine, dry powder. If zinc is added to the toxin during processing, the toxin's potency is greatly diminished. To be effective, the botulinum toxin must find and bind zinc in human tissues after being injected. If a person has inadequate zinc in their tissues, then the botulinum toxin will have a significantly diminished effect.

Botulinum Toxin & Zinc

Zinc Absorption There are a number of reasons why zinc absorption is inhibited, but the biggest culprits responsible are phytates. Phytates are a group of phosphate containing compounds that tightly bind zinc in the intestinal track and prevent zinc absorption. As little as 0.26 grams of phytate will inhibit the absorption of 50 mg of pure zinc. Phytates are found in whole grain breads, whole-wheat products, many cereals, soy, oats, legumes (including peas, peanuts and peanut butter), beans, corn, nuts, and rice.
7
How Does ZYTAZE ® Work? ZYTAZE® is specially formulated with a unique patent-pending combination of organic zinc along with phytase (an enzyme that neutralizes phytates in the digestive tract aiding in the absorption of zinc) to enhance the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections. Each Capsule Contains: 25 mg Zinc Citrate 500 mg Phytase
8
Recommended Dosage ZYTAZE® is supplied in a blister pack of 10 clear, hard shell capsules encapsulated with a white / off white crystalline powder. The recommended dosage is two capsules each day for four days prior to and on the day of receiving botulinum toxin injections. Take during meals or snacks, especially those containing meats. Do not take within two hours of medications and / or supplements. Do not take within two hours of consuming milk or milk products, wine and soft drinks.

ZYTAZE ® Study In the completed formal study* consisting of 77 patients, ZYTAZE ® again demonstrated a significant increase in the effect and duration of botulinum toxin injections. In fact, the duration of effect increased from 23.6% in the pilot study to 30% in the completed formal study. The completed formal study has been accepted for publishing in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (anticipated publish date April 2012). Pilot study results are available upon request and completed formal study results will be made available upon publication. *Koshy JC, Sharabi SE, Feldman EM, Hollier LM, Hollier LH, Patrinely JR, Soparkar CNS. Important Considerations Before Taking ZYTAZE ®
Zinc has a very low toxicity level and there are no known side effects at normal dosages. However, dosages above 50 mg daily is associated with reduced immune system functioning and is therefore not recommended. Zinc supplements may cause mild nausea in susceptible persons when taken on an empty stomach. For Best Results Take with food (red meats, poultry are good) preferably during lunch since milk, wine, and soft drinks should be avoided within two hours of taking ZYTAZE®. Avoid taking a multi-vitamins for five days while taking ZYTAZE® since the phytase can also help other metal ions absorb and may compete with zinc absorption.
11
What is the Cost? The Cost for Physicians: 12 boxes = $39
The Suggested Retail Cost: Approximately $60-80
12
Key Points ZYTAZE® increases both the duration of botulinum toxin and the effect of treatments meaning prolonged positive results for patients lasting until their next scheduled injection. Patients who had little to no success with botulinum toxin previously may see improved results. Unique patent-pending formula is the first and only therapy proven to enhance botulinum toxin injections. Allows physicians to distinguish their practice from others by offering this advanced technology. Patient satisfaction leads to more referrals.
13
Summary While botulinum toxin is widely known and used, many physicians are still unaware that it requires zinc to be effective. Zinc consumption through diet alone is inefficient because most foods rich in zinc also contain phytates, a group of phosphate containing compounds that inhibit zinc absorption. ZYTAZE® combines organic zinc along with phytase (an enzyme that effectively breaks down phytates) to aid zinc absorption thereby enhancing the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
15
How can ZYTAZE® benefit my practice?
With increased treatment efficacy and duration, patients will have better results from you than ever before and satisfied patients will lead to more referrals and increased practice revenue. By encouraging patients to purchase ZYTAZE® from your office prior to their next visit, they have already made a commitment to return for their injection in a timely manner, meaning fewer no-shows or cancellations.
16
Why can’t I just recommend over-the-counter zinc supplements for my patients?
Many foods that we consume on a daily basis contain phytates that block zinc absorption. By increasing zinc dosage, but not adding phytase to allow for increased zinc absorption, you simply won’t see any effect. The combination of zinc and phytase is patent protected and can only be found in ZYTAZE®.
17
Why didn’t some of my patients notice any difference in results?
Chances are they did not take ZYTAZE® to optimize their results. The following should help: ZYTAZE® should be taken for four days preceding your treatment and then on the day of your injection. It is best taken with food (red meats, poultry are good) and at lunch since it is better to avoid milk, wine, and soft drinks within two hours of taking ZYTAZE®. Avoid taking a multi-vitamins for five days while taking ZYTAZE® since the phytase can also help other metal ions absorb and may compete with zinc absorption.
18
How do I introduce ZYTAZE® to my existing patients?
Ideally through in-office patient communication like patient recalls, patient newsletters, postcards, etc.
